Do you have a question about the Accuphase AD-60 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Accuphase AD-60 Analog Disc Input Board is an optional component designed to be installed into a compatible Accuphase amplifier, enabling the playback of analog audio sources such as turntables. This board integrates seamlessly with the amplifier's existing architecture, providing dedicated inputs and processing for both Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil (MC) cartridges.

Function Description

The primary function of the AD-60 board is to convert the delicate analog signals from a phono cartridge into a line-level signal suitable for amplification. It incorporates a phono equalizer circuit that applies the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) equalization curve, which is essential for accurate playback of vinyl records. This curve compensates for the pre-emphasis applied during record cutting, ensuring a flat frequency response during playback.

The board features a 6-pin DIP switch that allows users to configure three key settings:

  1. MC/MM Select: This setting determines whether the board is configured for a Moving Magnet (MM) or Moving Coil (MC) cartridge. MM cartridges typically have a higher output voltage and require less gain, while MC cartridges have a much lower output and require significantly more gain. For some amplifier models (e.g., C-2150, C-2120, E-800, E-650, etc.), this selection is made directly from the amplifier's control panel, rendering the DIP switch setting for this particular function meaningless. For other models (e.g., C-2000, C-245, E-530, E-408, etc.), the MC/MM selection must be made on the DIP switch itself before installing the board.
  2. MC Input Impedance: This setting allows users to match the input impedance of the board to the specific requirements of their MC cartridge. Proper impedance matching is crucial for optimal sound quality, affecting frequency response, dynamics, and overall tonal balance. The available impedance settings are 300 ohms (factory default), 200 ohms, 100 ohms, and 30 ohms. As a general guideline, the MC input impedance should be set to at least two or three times the cartridge's internal impedance. Users are encouraged to experiment with different settings to find the one that yields the best sound.
  3. Subsonic Filter ON/OFF: This feature activates a filter that attenuates frequencies below 25 Hz with a slope of -12 dB/octave. This is particularly useful for removing subsonic noise caused by warped records or turntable rumble, which can otherwise interfere with the sound quality and cause unwanted woofer excursions. Engaging this filter can significantly improve the clarity and definition of the bass response, especially when playing records with significant low-frequency disturbances.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Gain:
    • MM: 40 dB
    • MC: 66 dB
  • Input Impedance:
    • MM: 47 kilohms (fixed)
    • MC: Selectable (300, 200, 100, or 30 ohms)
  • Subsonic Filter: Attenuates frequencies below 25 Hz at a slope of -12 dB/octave.

Usage Features

The AD-60 board is designed for user-friendly installation and configuration.

  • Installation: The board is inserted into an available option slot on the rear panel of a compatible Accuphase amplifier. Before installation, the amplifier's power must be turned off. A sub-panel on the amplifier's rear is removed, and the AD-60 board is gently pushed into the slot, aligning with the guide rails, until it connects with the internal connectors and its panel is flush with the amplifier's rear. It is then secured with two screws.
  • DIP Switch Configuration: The DIP switches are located on the board itself. For settings that are not controlled by the amplifier's front panel (e.g., MC/MM select for certain amp models, MC input impedance, and subsonic filter), the switches must be set before installing the board. Each switch has an "OFF" (pin up) and "ON" (pin down) position.
  • MC Input Impedance Matching: Users can fine-tune the MC input impedance to optimize the performance of their specific MC cartridge. The manual recommends listening to the sound at various settings to determine the best match.
  • Subsonic Filter: The ability to engage or disengage the subsonic filter provides flexibility in handling problematic records or turntable setups, enhancing the overall listening experience.

Maintenance Features

While the AD-60 board itself requires minimal maintenance, the manual provides crucial cautions for its handling and installation to ensure longevity and prevent damage:

  • Power Off During Installation/Removal: Always ensure the amplifier's power is off before inserting or removing the board to prevent equipment failure.
  • Proper Handling: Avoid inserting fingers or other objects into the slot, as this can cause damage. Do not touch the board's components, soldered areas, or connector pins. Handle the board by its edges or panel only.
  • Secure Fastening: Tighten the screws securely by hand after installation. Loose screws can lead to equipment failure.
  • Avoid Contact Enhancers: Never apply contact enhancers or conduction enhancers to connectors or terminals, as these materials may result in equipment damage.

By adhering to these guidelines, users can ensure the safe and effective operation of their Accuphase AD-60 Analog Disc Input Board, enjoying high-quality analog audio playback for years to come.
