Overview

The Actimove® Sling Application Guide provides comprehensive instructions for the application, customization, and adjustment of various Actimove® slings and immobilizers. The core product, the Actimove® Sling on a Roll, is a stretch-resistant foam material designed to keep the arm in a desired position with strong Y-tabs for secure fastening.

Actimove® Sling on a Roll

Function Description:

The Actimove® Sling on a Roll is a versatile, stretch-resistant foam material used to create various types of arm slings and supports. Its primary function is to provide support and immobilization for the arm, wrist, and shoulder, aiding in recovery from injuries or post-operative conditions. The material's stretch resistance ensures that the arm remains in the desired position, while the strong Y-tabs allow for easy and secure fastening, customization, and adjustment.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Material: Stretch-resistant foam.
  • Fastening: Strong Y-tabs for secure closure and adjustment.
  • Dimensions (Actimove® Sling Comfort):
    • Roll: 5.5 cm x 12 m (2½" x 13 yds)
    • Single Use: 5.5 cm x 1.9 m (2½" x 2 yds)
  • Colour: Blue.

Usage Features:

Standard Sling:

  • Indications: Strains, sprains, and post-orthopedic step-down support.
  • Application:
    1. Place a Y-tab on one end of the sling.
    2. Create a loop around the forearm (near the elbow).
    3. Close the loop with the Y-tab and bring the sling around the back.
    4. Bring the sling over the opposite shoulder and under the supported wrist.
    5. Place a Y-tab on the end of the sling.
    6. Adjust the wrist loop to the appropriate height to help reduce swelling.
    7. Close the wrist loop with the Y-tab.
    8. The patient can adjust the sling later as directed.

Cast and Short Arm Splint Support:

  • Indications: Post-casting or post-operative support.

    • Standard Cast Sling:

      1. After applying the cast, wait until the initial set is achieved.
      2. Apply the "Standard Sling" by wrapping the cast securely.
    • Simple Cast Support:

      1. Place a Y-tab on the end of the sling.
      2. Loop the sling around the neck and under the wrist, supporting the cast.
      3. Adjust to the appropriate height.
      4. Close the loop with the Y-tab.

Shoulder Immobilizer:

  • Indications: Strains, sprains, and post-orthopedic step-down support.
  • Application:
    1. Apply a Y-tab to the end of the sling.
    2. Wrap a loop around the wrist and close it with the Y-tab.
    3. Bring the sling over the same shoulder toward the back.
    4. Wrap the sling across the back and down to the opposite elbow.
    5. Wrap the sling around the shoulder toward the front of the body.
    6. Continue around the front of the body, pinning both the shoulder and the wrist loop, and then around the back following the waistline.
    7. Place a Y-tab on the end of the sling.
    8. Close the waist loop where it joins with the back diagonally.
    9. Ensure the Y-tab is placed where the patient can reach it with their opposite arm.

Humeral Coaptation:

  • Indications: Humeral splinting: post-casting or post-operative support.
  • Application (using Delta-Cast® Prelude product):
    1. Measure the sling starting from the head of the humerus and looping around the neck and opposite shoulder. Cut the sling, allowing enough length to secure the wrist loop. (Two Y-tabs will be applied later).
    2. Measure, cut, and trim the appropriate length of Delta-Cast® Prelude splint as directed in the Education Training Manual "Coaptation (Humeral) Splint".
    3. Open the Delta-Cast® Prelude padding at the proximal end of the splint (the end placed on the shoulder). Cut an approximately 2" long slit across the fiberglass, about 0.25" wide, leaving the edges of the fiberglass intact.
    4. Close the padding. Cut a slit in the padding in the middle of the fiberglass cut. Prepare the Delta-Cast® Prelude as directed.
    5. Pull the Actimove sling through the proximal slit cut in the Delta-Cast® Prelude material.
    6. Attach a Y-tab to the end of the sling and loop to close.
    7. Place the splint with the attached sling on top of the shoulder. Ensure it is pulled far enough up the shoulder, but not so far that it irritates the neck. Wrap the splint as directed with an elastic or crepe bandage and mold.
    8. Bring the sling around the opposite shoulder and position it between the body and wrist.
    9. Attach a second Y-tab to the end of the sling. Loop the sling around the wrist to close. Adjust the Y-tab, raising the hand slightly if required, to help reduce swelling.
  • Materials Required for Humeral Coaptation:
    • 3" or 4" wide by approximately 28" long Delta-Cast® Prelude product.
    • 4" crepe or elastic bandage.
    • 2" by approximately 36" long Actimove® Sling on a Roll.
    • 1" wide by 6" Y-tabs.

General Usage Features (Tips for Better Sling Application):

  • Measure the length of the sling required from the box before cutting.
  • Add Y-tabs after the sling is in place.
  • Fasten the hook and loop completely against the sling material to prevent chafing of patient skin.
  • When providing cast support, always apply the sling after casting materials have achieved initial set.
  • Use the FACTS formula to monitor the patient's injury (Function, Arterial pulse, Capillary refill, Temperature of skin, Sensation).
  • Review RICE instructions: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.
  • Adjust sling height according to extremity elevation needs.

Maintenance Features:

The manual does not explicitly detail maintenance features such as cleaning instructions. However, as medical devices, it is implied that they should be kept clean and used according to hygiene standards. For the Actimove® Sling on a Roll, the ability to cut the material to size and replace Y-tabs suggests a degree of modularity and potential for component replacement if needed. For specific cleaning or care instructions, users should refer to the product label and/or packaging insert.
