Do you have a question about the Aerco 89030 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The AERCO Condensate Neutralization Tank is a crucial component for managing condensate waste generated by gas-burning boilers and water heaters. Its primary function is to neutralize the acidic pH of this condensate, preventing corrosion of piping systems and minimizing environmental harm before discharge into drains or sewer systems.

Function Description:

The tank works by channeling acidic condensate through a neutralizing media. This media raises the pH of the condensate to a safe level, protecting domestic drains and public sewer systems from corrosive damage. The kit is designed for use with all types of natural gas and propane appliances that produce condensate.

Important Technical Specifications:

The Condensate Neutralization Tank (P/N 89030) has an 18-liter (4.8 U.S. gallon) capacity. It features 1" FNPT inlet/outlet connections and is constructed from polypropylene, ensuring corrosion resistance. The kit includes two 1" NPT PVC unions and two 1" NPT PVC close nipples for installation.

The tank comes pre-filled with neutralization media (P/N 89031). Each neutralization tank can handle condensate from appliances with a combined BTU/hr input of up to 6,400,000. For applications exceeding this, multiple tanks may be required, installed in parallel (not in series).

Dimensions of the Condensate Neutralization Tank (P/N 89030):

  • Overall Length: 17.5 inches (445 mm)
  • Overall Width: 8.0 inches (203 mm)
  • Inlet Connection Height: 6.5 inches (165 mm)
  • Outlet Connection Height: 6.3 inches (160 mm)
  • Overall Height: 13.5 inches (343 mm)

Applicable AERCO Models:

The Condensate Neutralization Tank is compatible with a wide range of AERCO models, including:

  • Benchmark Series
  • Innovation Series
  • Recon Series
  • MFC Series (natural gas only)
  • Modulex Series
  • AM Series (for maintenance; tank installation requires O&M manual GF-146)
  • KC1000 Models

Neutralizer Tank Application Chart (Examples):

  • BMK, INN, MLX EXT Series:
    • Eight (8) BMK750 (6,000,000 BTU/Hr. Input): 1 Kit Qty Required
    • Four (4) BMK2500 (10,000,000 BTU/Hr. Input): 2 Kits Qty Required (Note: Use one neutralizer tank for each pair of BMK 3.0/BMK 3000. Do not install multiple neutralizer tanks in series.)
    • Eight (8) INN800 (6,400,000 BTU/Hr. Input): 1 Kit Qty Required
    • Four (4) MLX EXT 3060 (12,240,000 BTU/Hr. Input): 2 Kits Qty Required
  • MFC Series:
    • Two (2) MFC 3000 (6,000,000 BTU/Hr. Input): 1 Kit Qty Required
    • One (1) MFC 8000 (8,000,000 BTU/Hr. Input): 2 Kits Qty Required (Note: Neutralizer tanks are to be installed in parallel. Do not install multiple neutralizer tanks in series.)

Usage Features:

  • Easy Installation: The kit is designed for fast and easy installation, with all materials made from corrosion-resistant components.
  • Versatile Installation Methods:
    • Gravity Drain (Pit Installation): The tank can be installed in a pit such that its inlet and discharge are at a lower elevation than the AERCO condensate trap outlet. Minimum pit depths vary by boiler model (e.g., 1-1/4" for BMK1500/2000, 1" for BMK2500/3000, 2" for BMK 4000/5000N).
    • Gravity Drain (Elevated Boiler): Alternatively, the boiler/water heater(s) and condensate trap(s) can be elevated to ensure the tank's inlet and outlet ports are lower than the boiler condensate outlet. Minimum boiler pad heights vary by model (e.g., 5-1/4" for BMK1500/2000, 5" for BMK2500/3000, 6" for BMK 4000/5000N).
    • Condensate Pump: If a gravity drain is not available or the boiler/water heater cannot be elevated, a condensate removal pump designed for condensing boilers and furnaces can be used to lift the condensate to the neutralization tank.
  • Safety Features:
    • Includes baffles designed to thoroughly channel flow for complete neutralization.
    • Features an integral bypass to prevent condensate backflow into the appliance.
    • NPT connections with unions facilitate versatile installation.
    • Crucial Safety Warning: Do not allow exhaust flue gases to vent through the Neutralization Tank to prevent injury or death from carbon monoxide. Ensure the AERCO condensate trap is properly installed upstream of the Neutralization Tank.
    • Condensate Pump Overflow Switch: If a condensate pump is used, it must be equipped with an overflow switch wired to the Remote Interlock of the AERCO boiler/water heater I/O Box (for KC1000, Innovation, Benchmark) or to Pins 3 and 4 of Connector I on the Modulex E8 controller. This switch prevents appliance operation if a pump failure occurs. For Modulex boilers, the overflow switch is only usable in Indoor/Outdoor Reset and Constant Set Point modes, not in 0-10 Volt Remote Set Point mode or with BMS II.

Maintenance Features:

  • Media Monitoring: The level and effectiveness of the neutralization media must be monitored periodically.
  • pH Level Checks: The pH of the condensate should be checked after it exits the tank. This can be done by removing the lid and taking a sample from the last chamber before the outlet, using pH test strips or an electronic pH meter.
  • Checking Frequency: Initially, check the pH level every three months for the first year. Depending on local water authority requirements and readings, the frequency can be reduced to every six months or annually.
  • Media Replacement: The neutralizing media should be replaced when the pH level drops below the minimum level specified by the local water authority.
  • Replacement Media:
    • For KC, BMK, INN, Recon, MFC, and Modulex series models, use P/N 89031.
    • For AM Series models, use P/N 62801022.
  • Replenishment Procedure: Replacement media comes in two clear plastic bags: a larger bag with larger pieces of material and a smaller bag with smaller pellets. When replenishing, first add the larger material, then sprinkle the smaller pellets on top.

Warranty:

The unit is warranted against defects in materials and workmanship for one year.
