Overview

This document describes the ALBA Cal.VD53 watch, an instruction booklet detailing its characteristics, display, crown/button functions, time and stopwatch settings, battery information, and general care guidelines.

The ALBA Cal.VD53 is a multi-function timepiece featuring both timekeeping and stopwatch capabilities. Its primary function is to display the current time, including hours, minutes, and seconds, along with a date display in numerals. The watch also incorporates a stopwatch function capable of measuring elapsed time up to 60 minutes in one-second increments.

Display and Crown/Buttons:

The watch face is designed with several hands and sub-dials for its various functions. The main dial features an hour hand, a minute hand, and a second hand for standard timekeeping. For the stopwatch function, there is a dedicated stopwatch minute hand and a stopwatch second hand. Additionally, a 24-hour hand is present, and the date is displayed in a numeral window.

The watch is operated using a crown and two buttons, labeled A and B. The crown has three positions:

  • a: Normal position: This is the default position for the crown when the watch is in regular operation.
  • b: First click: Pulling the crown out to this position allows for certain adjustments, primarily related to the date setting.
  • c: Second click: Pulling the crown out further to this position enables more extensive adjustments, such as setting the time and performing stopwatch hand position adjustments.

Buttons A and B are used for controlling the stopwatch functions. Button A typically serves as the Start/Stop/Restart button for the stopwatch, while Button B is used for resetting the stopwatch or for split time measurements.

Screw Down Crown (for applicable models):

Some models of the ALBA Cal.VD53 feature a screw-down crown, which enhances water resistance.

  • Unlocking the crown: To unlock, turn the crown counterclockwise until the threads are no longer engaged. Once unlocked, the crown can be pulled out to its first or second click positions.
  • Locking the crown: To lock, push the crown back into the normal position. Then, while pressing it lightly, turn the crown clockwise until it is tight, ensuring the threads are fully engaged.

Stopwatch Hand Position Adjustment:

Before setting the time, it is crucial to ensure that the stopwatch hands are in the "0" position when the stopwatch is reset. If the stopwatch hands are not at "0", they need to be adjusted.

  1. Pull the crown out to the second click position.
  2. Press Button A or Button B to reset the stopwatch second and minute hands to the "0" position.
    • Pressing Button A moves the hands counterclockwise.
    • Pressing Button B moves the hands clockwise.
    • If the buttons are kept pressed, the stopwatch hands will move quickly. The stopwatch minute hand moves in correspondence with the stopwatch second hand.
  3. Once the hands are at "0", push the crown back into the normal position.

Time Setting:

Before setting the time, confirm that the stopwatch measurement is stopped.

  1. Pull the crown out to the first click. Turn the crown clockwise until the previous day's date appears (for VD53 models with date display).
  2. Pull the crown out to the second click when the second hand reaches the 12 o'clock position. The second hand will stop. Advance the hour and minute hands by turning the crown.
  3. Continue turning the crown clockwise until the desired date appears (for VD53 models with date display).
  4. Turn the crown to set the hour and minute hands to the correct time.
  5. Push the crown back into the normal position in accordance with a time signal to ensure accuracy.

Stopwatch Operation:

The stopwatch can measure up to 60 minutes in one-second increments. The measured time is indicated by the dedicated stopwatch hands, which operate independently of the main timekeeping hands. Before using the stopwatch, ensure the crown is in the normal position and the stopwatch hands are reset to "0". If the stopwatch hands do not return to "0" upon reset, refer to the "Stopwatch Hand Position Adjustment" procedure.

  • Standard measurement:
    1. Press Button A to START.
    2. Press Button A again to STOP.
    3. Press Button B to RESET.
  • Accumulated elapsed time measurement: This allows for stopping and restarting the stopwatch to measure total elapsed time, excluding pauses.
    1. Press Button A to START.
    2. Press Button A to STOP.
    3. Press Button A to RESTART.
    4. Press Button A to STOP.
    5. Press Button B to RESET.
  • Split time measurement: This function allows for measuring intermediate times without stopping the main stopwatch measurement.
    1. Press Button A to START.
    2. Press Button B to record a SPLIT time. The stopwatch hands will momentarily stop to display the split time.
    3. Press Button B again to RELEASE the split time, and the stopwatch hands will catch up to the ongoing measurement.
    4. Press Button A to STOP the main measurement.
    5. Press Button B to RESET.

Notes on Operating the Watch:

  • Time setting: Avoid pressing any buttons when the crown is at the second click position, as this can inadvertently move the stopwatch hands. The 24-hour hand moves in correspondence with the hour and minute hands; ensure it is correctly set when adjusting the hour hand. When setting the minute hand, it is recommended to advance it 4 to 5 minutes past the desired time and then turn it back to the exact minute for precise setting.
  • Date setting (VD53 only): The date needs to be manually adjusted on the first day after a 30-day month and February. Do not set the date between 9:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m., as the date change mechanism may not function properly during this period. If adjustment is necessary during these hours, first change the time to outside this period, set the date, and then reset the time to the correct hour.
  • Stopwatch: The restart and stop functions of the stopwatch can be repeatedly activated by pressing Button A. Similarly, split time measurements and their release can be repeated by pressing Button B.

Battery Change:

The watch uses a SEIKO SR920SW battery, with an approximate life of 2 years.

  • Battery life can be shorter than specified if the stopwatch is used for more than 2 hours a day.
  • The battery inserted at the factory is for checking the watch's function and performance, so its actual life in your possession may be less than the specified period.
  • When the battery expires, it should be replaced as soon as possible to prevent malfunctions.
  • It is recommended to contact an AUTHORIZED PULSAR DEALER for battery replacement.
  • After battery replacement, the stopwatch hand position and time/calendar must be adjusted.

Battery Life Indicator:

When the battery is nearing its end, the second hand will move at two-second intervals instead of the normal one-second intervals. This indicates that the battery should be replaced soon. The watch remains accurate even when the second hand is moving at two-second intervals.

Necessary Procedure After Battery Change:

After replacing the battery, or if any hands move improperly, the stopwatch hands must be reset to the "0" position.

  1. Pull the crown out to the second click.
  2. Press and hold Buttons A and B simultaneously for 2 seconds or longer. The stopwatch second hand will turn counterclockwise and then return to its original position.
  3. Press Button A or Button B to reset the stopwatch second and minute hands to the "0" position.
    • Pressing Button A moves the hands counterclockwise.
    • Pressing Button B moves the hands clockwise.
  4. Once the hands are at "0", turn the crown to set the time.
  5. Push the crown back into the normal position.

Warnings and Cautions:

  • WARNING: Do not remove the battery from the watch. If removal is necessary, keep it out of reach of children. If a child swallows it, seek immediate medical attention. Never short-circuit, tamper with, or heat the battery, and never expose it to fire, as it may burst, become very hot, or catch fire.
  • CAUTION: The battery is not rechargeable. Attempting to recharge it may cause battery leakage or damage.

Water Resistance:

The watch's water resistance varies by model, indicated by inscriptions on the case back.

  • Non-water resistant: If "WATER RESISTANT" is not inscribed, the watch is not water resistant. Avoid getting it wet, as water can damage the movement. If it does get wet, have it checked by an AUTHORIZED ALBA DEALER or SERVICE CENTER.
  • Water resistance (3 bar): If "WATER RESISTANT" is inscribed, the watch is designed to withstand up to 3 bar, suitable for accidental contact with splashes of water or rain. It is not designed for swimming or diving.
  • Water resistance (5 bar): If "WATER RESISTANT 5 BAR" is inscribed, the watch is designed to withstand up to 5 bar and is suitable for swimming, yachting, and taking a shower.
  • Water resistance (10 bar/15 bar/20 bar): If "WATER RESISTANT 10 BAR", "WATER RESISTANT 15 BAR", or "WATER RESISTANT 20 BAR" is inscribed, the watch is designed to withstand up to 10/15/20 bar. It is suitable for taking a bath, shallow diving, but not for scuba diving. For scuba diving, an ALBA Diver's watch is recommended.

Important notes for water-resistant watches (5, 10, 15, or 20 bar):

  • Before using in water, ensure the crown is pushed in completely.
  • Do not operate the crown when the watch is wet or in water.
  • If used in seawater, rinse the watch in fresh water and dry it completely.
  • When showering with a 5 bar watch, or bathing with a 10, 15, or 20 bar watch:
    • Do not operate the crown when the watch is wet with soapy water or shampoo.
    • If the watch is left in warm water, slight time loss or gain may occur, but this will correct itself when the watch returns to normal temperature.
  • NOTE: Pressure in bar is a test pressure and does not directly correspond to actual diving depth. Swimming movements can increase pressure at a given depth. Exercise caution when diving into water.

Temperatures:

The watch operates with stable accuracy within a temperature range of 5°C to 35°C (41°F to 95°F). Temperatures exceeding 60°C (140°F) can cause battery leakage or shorten battery life. Prolonged exposure to very low temperatures below -10°C (+14°F) may cause slight time loss or gain. These conditions will correct themselves when the watch returns to normal temperature.

Magnetism:

Strong magnetism can adversely affect the watch. Keep it away from close contact with magnetic objects.

Periodic Check:

It is recommended to have the watch checked every 2 to 3 years by an AUTHORIZED ALBA DEALER or SERVICE CENTER. This ensures that the case, crown, buttons, gasket, and crystal seal remain intact, maintaining the watch's performance and water resistance.

Care of Case and Bracelet:

To prevent rusting caused by dust, moisture, and perspiration, periodically wipe the case and bracelet with a soft, dry cloth.

Shocks:

Light activities will not harm the watch, but avoid dropping it or hitting it against hard surfaces, as this can cause damage.

Chemicals:

Do not expose the watch to solvents, mercury, cosmetic spray, detergents, adhesives, or paints. These substances can cause discoloration, deterioration, or damage to the case, bracelet, and other components.

Precaution Regarding Case Back Protective Film:

If your watch has a protective film and/or a sticker on the case back, be sure to peel them off before using your watch to prevent skin irritation or damage to the film itself.
