Overview

The AlcoScan AL2500 is a digital personal breathalyzer designed to measure alcohol in human breath and convert it to a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) reading. This device is portable and convenient, requiring no mouthpiece for operation. It is intended for use in the diagnosis of alcohol intoxication.

Function Description:

The AlcoScan AL2500 analyzes a breath sample to detect alcohol in the lungs. The device features a digital LED display that shows the BAC reading. It operates by having the user exhale sharply and steadily into a sensor opening for 3 to 4 seconds. After a breath sample is taken, the unit beeps to indicate it has registered a reading and then again when it begins analyzing the sample, displaying a "WAIT" indicator. Once the analysis is complete, the "WAIT" indicator turns off, and the BAC reading is displayed for 15 seconds before the unit automatically shuts off. The device is powered by two 1.5V AA alkaline batteries.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Method of Measure: Breath sample to BAC
  • Detection Range: 0.00% - 0.40% BAC
  • Accuracy: +/- 0.01% up to 0.10% BAC. Accuracy has been established at a Blood Alcohol Concentration of 0.008 and 0.032. Accuracy at a Blood Alcohol Concentration greater than 0.032 has not been evaluated.
  • Sensor: Oxide semiconductor
  • Power: Two 1.5V AA alkaline batteries (included)
  • Warm-up Time: Less than 1 minute (shortens to less than 20 seconds for multiple tests)
  • Testing Capacity: Approximately 200 tests with new batteries
  • DOT Approved: Yes
  • Operating Temperature: 50 - 104 degrees Fahrenheit (10 - 40 degrees Celsius)
  • Display: 3-Digit LCD (0.00)
  • Dimensions: 4.1 H x 1.6 W x 0.8 D
  • Weight: 3 oz

Usage Features:

  • Power On/Off: To turn on, press and hold the Power Switch. The cumulative test count is displayed while holding the switch. Release the switch, and a countdown from "234" to "0" will appear as the unit warms up (less than 30 seconds). The unit will play two short beeps when ready. To manually shut off, press the POWER button again. If no sample is taken within 20 seconds, the unit will beep four times and shut off automatically.
  • Breath Sample Collection: Users should take a deep breath and exhale sharply and steadily into the sensor opening (located above the display) for at least 3 to 4 seconds.
  • Result Display: Once analyzed, the BAC result is displayed as a percentage from 0.00% to 0.40% for 15 seconds.
  • Interpretation of Results:
    • 0.00% to 0.01%: Safe range (Little/no alcohol intake).
    • 0.02% to 0.04%: Moderate range (Increased alcohol intake).
    • 0.05% and over: Warning range (Ability to drive may be impaired).
    • The manual emphasizes that drinking alcohol in ANY amount may impair the ability to drive, and there is no "safe" level of alcohol intake before driving.
  • Important Usage Precautions:
    • Wait at least 20 minutes after eating or drinking before testing to avoid interference from mouth contaminants (alcohol, food, smoke, excess saliva, alcohol-based mouthwash).
    • Avoid testing in high wind or enclosed spaces.
    • Do not blow smoke, saliva, or other contaminants into the mouthpiece to prevent sensor damage.
    • The device should not be used as a tool to drink and drive.
    • Keep out of extreme temperatures and out of reach of children.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Installation: For first-time use, install two 1.5V AA batteries by opening the rear cover, ensuring proper alignment with +/- marks.
  • Recalibration: To maintain accuracy, the sensor inside the AlcoScan AL2500 must be recalibrated every 200 tests or at least once a year, whichever comes first. Frequent "high positive" readings may necessitate earlier recalibration. Recalibration requires mailing the device to AK GlobalTech. Contact support@alcomate.net for details and fees.
  • Sensor Module Replacement: Sensor modules should be replaced every 200 tests or at least once yearly, whichever comes first.
  • Troubleshooting:
    • "bAt" display: Indicates low battery power. Replace batteries.
    • "Er" display: Indicates a general problem with the alcohol sensor or physical damage to the device. A new device should be purchased.
    • For other issues, contact AK GlobalTech support at support@alcomate.net with error codes and photos.

Warranty:

AK GlobalTech Corporation provides a one (1) year limited warranty from the date of purchase, covering defects in workmanship or material, excluding spent or used sensor modules under normal use. The warranty is limited to replacing, adjusting, or repairing the unit upon return with proof of purchase, shipping address, and contact information. The warranty is void if the unit has been tampered with (excluding opening the rear cover as described in the manual) or maliciously damaged. Calibration is a required periodic maintenance procedure and is not covered under warranty service, nor are shipping costs for calibration. The warranty is non-transferable. The manufacturer disclaims liability for direct, indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages and emphasizes that any action based on the product's reading is at the user's risk. Correlation between breath alcohol content and blood alcohol concentration depends on many variables, and a low reading does not guarantee unimpaired physical or mental performance.
