The NycoCard™ READER II is a compact, battery-powered reflectometer designed to measure the colored surfaces of NycoCard™ tests and calculate concentration values. It measures color responses through spectral reflectance in three parts of the visible spectrum.

Function Description

The NycoCard™ READER II consists of two main units: the instrument box (1), which serves as the operational and calculating unit, and the Reader pen (5), which is the measurement unit. The instrument box's primary components include a microprocessor, an LCD display (3), and push buttons (2) for operation. The Reader pen's key elements are Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) (11), a photodiode (12), and a light/dark detector (10). A pen cable (4) connects the instrument box and the pen. The penholder (8) is located to the right of the display on the instrument box. In front of this holder, there is a lid (6), and on the rear side of the lid, a white calibration device (9) is placed.

The Reader pen contains three pairs of LEDs: red, green, and blue. Reflected light from the test sample is measured, relative to a white sample, by a light-sensitive photodiode circuit. When a specific test from the NycoCard™ READER II test menu is chosen, the required LEDs illuminate the sample to be measured. The sample will reflect some of the light, which will be detected by the photodiode. When the pen is placed over the sample and the pen sleeve is pushed down, the light/dark detector registers that the environment has changed from light to dark, and the measurement automatically starts. The sleeve ensures the pen is held stable in a vertical position, and external light is excluded from the sample.

Usage Features

The instrument is operated by three push buttons:

ON/Select: To switch on the instrument and to screen the main menus and sub-menus.
Enter: To enter and activate the menu selected by the Select button.
Quit: To exit the current menu or function.

Four main menus are available:

Main menu/Calibrate: Instructs the instrument to measure the White Calibration Device.
Main menu/Enter test: Contains sub-menus corresponding to each available NycoCard™ test.
Main menu/Options: Contains three sub-menus:
- Enter language: To change the language on the display.
- HbA1c: To select between measuring units %, mmol/mol, or % & mmol/mol.
- New white: To measure a new value of white when an "Error Recalibrate" message appears.
Main menu/Off: Followed by "ENTER" will turn off the instrument. Pressing QUIT and ENTER simultaneously will also turn off the instrument, regardless of the menu position.

Operating Procedure:

Adjusting: Place the pen in the penholder and turn the Reader on. The instrument automatically performs "Adjusting." Allow the procedure to complete without touching the pen. A single beep indicates completion.
White calibration: Press ENTER to activate the menu and follow on-screen instructions. When "Place pen..." is displayed, lift the pen from the holder and place it on the White Calibration Device. Hold steady until a single beep indicates calibration is finished.
Measuring the NycoCard™ test: Choose the desired test from "Main menu / Enter test." With the pen in the penholder, press Enter briefly and follow on-screen instructions. Measurement starts when the pen sleeve is pushed down. The test result will be displayed as a concentration value after a few seconds.
- The NycoCard™ test should be placed on the Reader pad (7) when measuring.
- Follow general laboratory precautions when handling blood samples.
- Measurement is in progress when "Active Wait..." is shown on the display.

Maintenance Features

The NycoCard™ READER II has three replaceable accessories: the white calibration device (9), pen tips (14), and pen rings (13). These should be regularly inspected and replaced if dirty or damaged.

Replacing the pen tip: Gently snap off the old pen tip with your fingers and replace it with a new one.
Replacing the pen ring: Hold the sleeve with one hand and gently wiggle the ring off with the other hand. Replace with a new ring and ensure it fits correctly.
Replacing the calibration device: Remove the device by simultaneously pressing the small lever down and the opposite side upwards. Place the new calibration device.

Battery Replacement:

Use a screwdriver to open the battery lid (15).
Remove the old batteries (16).
Replace with three new rechargeable NiMH batteries.
Replace the battery lid. New batteries must be charged before using the instrument.

Important Notes:

Do not interchange Reader pens between different instruments, as specific calibration data is stored in the instrument box.
The pen should be placed in the penholder when not in use to protect the optics from dust and damage.
Adjusting is crucial each time the instrument is turned on and when the pen tip is replaced.
White calibration should be performed before each single, sporadic measurement and before each series of measurements (max 20 measurements per series).
Ensure the instrument is acclimatized to room temperature before use.
Avoid contact with water or other liquids.
Check for strong electromagnetic radiation in the surroundings, as it might interfere with proper operation.
Ensure batteries are inserted in the correct direction and that the charger's output voltage matches the instrument's requirements.
Be careful not to touch the optics of the Reader pen.
Dirt or damage to the pen tip or white calibration device can cause wrong measurements.
Ensure the white calibration surface is free from dust and scratches.
Remember to close the lid after white calibration.
Ensure batteries are inserted correctly and follow supplier recommendations for disposal of used batteries.

The NycoCard™ READER II will automatically switch off if left on stand-by for about 10 minutes. When turned on again, the last measured value will be displayed.
