Overview

The Allanson OMNI™ Electronic Ignitor, available in models Type 2280U and 2280-XXX, is a device designed to provide a reliable ignition source for gas and oil applications. These electronic ignitors are engineered for both intermittent duty (constant) and interrupted duty operation.

Function Description:

The electronic ignitor generates a high-voltage spark to ignite gas or oil in burners. It converts a standard AC input voltage and frequency into a high-frequency, high-voltage output suitable for ignition. The device is designed for easy installation and maintenance, ensuring consistent performance in heating systems.

Important Technical Specifications:

Absolute Minimum Readings:

  • Input Supply Voltage (V): 216-252V
  • Input Supply Frequency (Hz): 50/60 Hz
  • Primary Volt - Amperes (VA): 87 VA
  • Secondary Voltage (kV peak): 17.5 kV peak
  • Secondary Frequency (kHz): >20 kHz
  • Secondary Short Circuit Current (mA): 28 mA
  • Storage Temperature: -40 to +80 °C
  • Operating Temperature: -30 to +40 °C
  • Operating Relative Humidity (%): 90%
  • Loading Air Gap (inches): 1/16 to 3/16 inches

Mechanical Specifications:

The device has a compact design with specific dimensions for integration into various burner systems.

  • Overall Height: Approximately 4.92 inches
  • Width (base): Approximately 1.64 inches
  • Depth (base): Approximately 0.90 inches
  • Mounting Hole Spacing: Approximately 2.01 inches (center-to-center for mounting screws)
  • Output Terminal Spacing: Approximately 4.06 inches (center-to-center for high voltage terminals)

Usage Features:

Installation:

  1. Inspection: Before installation, it is crucial to inspect the ignitor's case and porcelain bushings for any damage incurred during transportation or handling. The product should not be used if the secondary bushings are chipped or cracked.
  2. Mounting: Select the appropriate base plate from the provided kit to fit the burner. Route the primary lead wires to the designated lead exit on the base plate and secure the electronic ignitor to the plate using the three self-tapping screws.
  3. Connection: Install the assembled ignitor onto the burner. Route the primary leads to the junction box for electrical connection. The black lead must be connected to the negative terminal (-) and the red lead to the positive terminal (+) of the power supply. Reversing these connections will prevent the unit from operating correctly. Only UL Listed and CSA approved wire nuts should be used for connections.

Testing (to be carried out by qualified personnel ONLY):

A warning is issued regarding the high voltages and currents, which can cause serious injury or death. Extreme caution is advised to avoid contact with primary live leads and to maintain a distance of at least 5 inches from energized secondary terminals or parts of the secondary circuit. The mid-point of the transformer must be grounded before energizing the primary.

The OMNI™ 2280U / 2280-XXX Electronic Ignitor can be tested using the following methods:

  • Chek-Mate™ (Allanson's Ignitor/Transformer tester): Touch the high voltage spheres of the ignitor to the tester's high voltage contacts. If the green LED illuminates, the unit is functioning correctly.
  • Short Circuit Current Test: Connect a true RMS high-frequency milliammeter to the output terminals. Energize the primary with 240 Volts at 50/60 Hz. The milliammeter reading should be within 10% of the rated value.
  • Open Circuit Test: This test requires an oscilloscope and a high-voltage oscilloscope probe. Connect the high-voltage probe from one secondary terminal to the ground terminal (located between the high voltage bushings). Measure the peak waveform on the oscilloscope. Repeat for the opposite high-voltage terminal. The sum of the two readings should be within 10% of the nameplate rating.
  • Field Testing: Connect the electronic ignitor's grounding terminal to a good ground. Connect the primary leads to 240 Volts. Energize the primary. Using a well-insulated screwdriver, touch one part of the shaft to one high-voltage terminal. Pivot the screwdriver until an arc is drawn from the opposite terminal. Gradually increase the air gap and note the distance at which the arc extinguishes. The minimum distance should be 1/2 inch.

Maintenance Features:

The OMNI® Electronic Ignitor is designed with no moving parts, simplifying maintenance. The only required maintenance is the annual cleaning of the porcelain bushings with a soft cloth during the furnace inspection.
