INSTALLING RACK ON VEHICLE:
TOP HOOKS MUST BE COMPLETELY HOOKED OVER METAL EDGES AT TOP
OF TRUNK, REAR DOOR, OR HATCHBACK. NEVER HOOK TO RAIN GUTTERS,
ROOF RACKS, VERTICAL GLASS OR PLASTIC MOLDINGS. OPEN TRUNK/
HATCH SLIGHTLY FOR EASIEST ATTACHMENT OF HOOKS. BE CAREFUL
THAT HOOKS DO NOT BIND WHEN TRUNK/ HATCH IS OPENED. BINDING
HOOKS WILL DAMAGE VEHICLE.
SECURING TOP HOOKS ON VEHICLES WITHOUT ADEQUATE CLEARANCE
AT THE TOP EDGE OF REAR TRUNK/ HATCH: UNTHREAD TOP STRAPS
FROM METAL BUCKLES AND OPEN REAR TRUNK/ HATCH. PLACE TOP
HOOKS INSIDE OF VEHICLE (JUST INSIDE OF TOP EDGE OF REAR TRUNK/
HATCH). CARFEULLY CLOSE REAR TRUNK/ HATCH ON TOP STRAPS,
MAKING CERTAIN HOOKS DO NOT BIND BETWEEN FRAME AND REAR
DOOR. IMPORTANT: WITH REAR DOOR CLOSED, PULL TOP STRAPS TO
BRING HOOKS TIGHT AGAINST INSIDE OF VEHICLE. RE-THREAD TOP
STRAPS AS SHOWN IN SECTION B. MOUNT RACK TO VEHICLE.
SET LENGTH OF TOP STRAPS TO POSITION RACK WITH ITS CARRY
ARMS INCLINED SLIGHTLY UPWARDS, AND HIGH ENOUGH TO KEEP
BIKES AWAY FROM ROAD AND EXHAUST.
ONCE THE LENGTH OF THE TOP STRAPS ARE SET, THE BOTTOM FOOT
ASSEMBLY SHOULD BE HELD AGAINST THE VEHICLE IN ITS COMPLETELY
OPEN POSITION. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE BOTTOM GRAY RUBBER
PADS ARE INSTALLED ON THE VEHICLE IN A LOCATION WHERE THERE IS
PROPER SUPPORT. THE BOTTOM FEET SHOULD NEVER BE INSTALLED
ON GLASS.
MAKE SURE THAT THE BOTTOM STRAPS ARE PROPERLY THREADED
THROUGH PLASTIC BUCKLES.
COMPLETELY HOOK BOTTOM HOOKS TO A METAL EDGE BELOW BUMPER,
OR AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TRUNK/ REAR DOOR. IF THERE IS NO METAL
EDGE BELOW BUMPER, SEE ALTERNATE METHOD FOR BOTTOM HOOK
ATTACHMENT ON THE NEXT PAGE.
COMPLETELY TIGHTEN BOTTOM STRAPS BY PULLING ON FREE END OF
STRAPS UNTIL ELASTIC PORTION OF STRAPS ARE COMPLETELY STRETCHED.
ONCE THE BOTTOM STRAP IS IN PLACE, YOU SHOULD INSTALL THE LEFT AND
RIGHT SIDE STRAPS. FIRST IT IS IMPORTANT TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU USE THE CORRECT STRAPS FOR THIS - THE SIDE STRAPS ARE THE
STRAPS WITH THE SMALL METAL HOOKS THAT ARE LABELED "SIDE STRAPS". THE HOOKS ON THESE STRAPS SHOULD BE ATTACHED TO
THE LEFT AND RIGHT SIDE OF THE TRUNK/ REAR DOOR. ONCE THE HOOKS ARE IN PLACE, COMPLETELY TIGHTEN THE STRAPS BY
PULLING ON THE FREE END OF THE STRAPS.

Overview

This document provides instructions for the Allen Model QS2/3 bicycle rack.

Function Description:

The Allen Model QS2/3 is a bicycle rack designed to transport bicycles on the rear of a vehicle, typically attached to the trunk, rear door, or hatchback. It allows users to carry one or more bicycles securely, freeing up interior vehicle space and providing a convenient way to transport bikes for recreational activities or travel. The rack utilizes a system of hooks and straps to attach to the vehicle, with carry arms and cradles to hold the bicycles.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Maximum Capacity: 35 LB (pounds) per bike.
  • Bike Types: Designed for standard bicycles; not suitable for tandems, mopeds, or recumbents.
  • Attachment Points: Top hooks attach to solid metal edges of the trunk lid or rear door. Bottom feet rest on a rigid surface of the car. Bottom hooks attach to a metal edge below the bumper or at the bottom of the trunk/rear door. Side straps attach to the left and right sides of the trunk/rear door.
  • Materials: Features rubber feet, metal buckles, plastic buckles, and straps.
  • Safety Features: Requires secure tying of bikes to the rack, use of bike tie-downs or additional straps if necessary, and ensures car tail lights remain visible.

Usage Features:

A. Setting Up Rack:

  1. Fold Out Assembly: Begin by folding out the top foot/carry arm assembly.
  2. Set-Up Pins: Ensure the set-up pins "snap" into place, indicating the assembly is correctly positioned.
  3. Bottom Foot Assembly: Completely fold out the bottom foot assembly.

B. Before Installing Rack:

  1. Clean Surfaces: Ensure all contact surfaces between the car and the rubber feet are thoroughly clean and free of dirt.
  2. Foot Spacing: Verify that all rubber feet are properly spaced.
  3. Buckle Threading: Confirm that the top buckles are threaded correctly as shown in the instructions (threaded from the outside in, not the inside out).
  4. Strap Inspection: Inspect all straps for any signs of wear or damage.

C. Installing Rack on Vehicle:

  1. Top Hook Attachment:
    • Completely hook the top hooks over the metal edges at the top of the trunk, rear door, or hatchback.
    • Crucial: Never hook to rain gutters, roof racks, vertical glass, or plastic moldings.
    • Slightly open the trunk/hatch for easier attachment.
    • Caution: Be careful that hooks do not bind when the trunk/hatch is opened, as binding will damage the vehicle.
    • Alternative for Limited Clearance: If there's inadequate clearance, unthread top straps from metal buckles, open the rear trunk/hatch, place top hooks inside the vehicle (just inside the top edge), carefully close the trunk/hatch on the top straps (ensuring hooks don't bind between the frame and rear door), pull top straps to bring hooks tight against the inside of the vehicle, and re-thread top straps as shown in Section B.
  2. Strap Length Adjustment: Set the length of the top straps to position the rack with its carry arms inclined slightly upwards and high enough to keep bikes away from the road and exhaust.
  3. Bottom Foot Placement: Once top strap length is set, the bottom foot assembly should be held against the vehicle in its completely open position. Ensure the bottom gray rubber pads are installed on a location with proper support; never install them on glass.
  4. Bottom Strap Threading: Verify that the bottom straps are properly threaded through the plastic buckles.
  5. Bottom Hook Attachment:
    • Completely hook the bottom hooks to a metal edge below the bumper or at the bottom of the trunk/rear door.
    • Alternative Method #1 (No Metal Edge Below Bumper): Remove bottom straps from the bottom horizontal cross-bar, loop them around the carry-arms near the top metal buckles, and attach the hooks to the lower edge of the trunk/rear hatch. Then tighten the bottom straps.
    • Alternative Method #2 (No Metal Edge Below Bumper): Before installing the rack, remove the bottom straps, open the trunk slightly, place the bottom hooks just inside the trunk/hatch, carefully close the trunk on the bottom strap, pull straps to bring hooks against the inside of the trunk, mount the rack as described in Section C, and then re-thread and tighten the bottom straps.
  6. Tighten Bottom Straps: Completely tighten the bottom straps by pulling on the free end until the elastic portion is fully stretched.
  7. Side Strap Installation: Install the left and right side straps. Use the straps with small metal hooks labeled "SIDE STRAPS." Attach these hooks to the left and right sides of the trunk/rear door. Once in place, completely tighten the straps by pulling on their free ends.

F. Loading Bicycles on Rack:

  1. Prepare Bicycles: Remove all loose items from bicycles (pumps, bags, etc.) and check that all quick-release hubs are tight.
  2. First Bicycle: Load the first bicycle into the tie-down position closest to the vehicle, with its chain and gears facing away from the rack. Ensure bicycles do not come into contact with the vehicle.
  3. Subsequent Bicycles: Load subsequent bicycles in alternating directions. For best weight distribution, load heavier bicycles first, with lighter bicycles on the outside. Add padding between bicycle contact points if necessary.
  4. Final Check: After loading, check that the entire rack is secure and firmly in place. Be aware that vision out of the rear window may be restricted; use side mirrors accordingly when backing up.
  5. Women's Style Frames: Place one carry arm under the front top tube. With the other carry arm, rotate the tie-down cradle and place the carry in the space behind the seat tube and below the rear down-stay. The Allen 900B Adaptor Bar is also recommended for this application.

G. Securing Bikes to Rack:

  1. Place Bicycle: Place the bicycle in the cradle.
  2. Thread Straps: Thread the individual tie-down straps.
  3. Pull Strap Tight: Pull the strap tight to secure the bicycle.
  4. Important: Secure the front wheel of the inside bicycle with excess bottom strap or additional straps to prevent the wheel from coming into contact with the vehicle.

Maintenance Features:

  • Inspection: Regularly inspect all straps for wear or damage.
  • Replacement Parts: If any part of the rack is damaged, worn, or missing, contact R. A. Allen Co., Inc. for replacement parts.
  • Warranty: Allen offers a lifetime warranty against defects in workmanship or material for the original purchaser. The warranty covers repair or replacement but does not cover damage or wear resulting from day-to-day use or general wear and tear. Visit www.allen.bike for complete warranty information.

General Safety Precautions:

  • Vehicle Compatibility: Only use the rack on vehicles where it can be properly mounted as described.
  • Accident Prevention: Rack or bikes falling can cause serious accidents and bodily injury.
  • Driving: Drive conservatively, especially over bumps. Never use off-road.
  • Local Regulations: Use only in accordance with local motor vehicle and traffic regulations.
  • Trunk/Rear Door: Do not open the trunk or rear door when hooks or rack are in place to avoid damage.
  • Installation Location: Install rack and load bicycles only at a safe distance away from moving traffic.
  • Contact Points: Only rubber feet and hooks of the rack should come into contact with the vehicle.
  • Clearance: Ensure the rack and bicycles are kept at a safe distance from the road and hot exhaust.
  • Removal: Remove the rack from the car when not in use.
