Question and Answer IconNeed help?

Do you have a question about the Alpine 5903 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Alpine 5903 is a compact disc player designed for in-car use, providing high-quality digital audio with a wide dynamic range and clear sound. It features a user-friendly design with convenient controls and functions.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • System: Optical (compact disc system)
  • Quantizing Bit Number: 16-bit linear system
  • Channels: 2-channels stereo
  • Frequency Response: 5 – 20,000 Hz ± 1.0 dB
  • Wow & Flutter: Below measurable limits
  • Total Harmonic Distortion: 0.03% (at 1 kHz)
  • Dynamic Range: 92 dB
  • Signal-to-Noise Ratio: 92 dB (IHF A-weighted)
  • Channel Separation: 85 dB (at 1 kHz)
  • Power Requirement: 14.0V DC (11 – 16V allowable)
  • Output Voltage (at Volume Center): 500mV/10k ohms
  • Bass: ± 18 dB at 30 Hz
  • Treble: ± 15 dB at 15 kHz
  • Weight: 2.4 Kg (5 lb. 5 oz.)
  • Chassis Size: Width: 178mm (7"), Height: 50mm (2"), Depth: 153mm (6")
  • Nosepiece Size: Width: 171mm (6-3/4"), Height: 48mm (1-7/8"), Depth: 15mm (19/32")

Usage Features:

  • 3 Inch Disc Compatibility: The player can accommodate 3-inch discs without the need for an adaptor ring.
  • 4-Time Oversampling Digital Filter: Enhances audio quality by oversampling the digital signal four times.
  • Scan Play: Allows playback of the first 10 seconds of each track, useful for quickly finding a specific program on a disc.
  • Power Loading/Self Loading: Gently pulls a partially inserted compact disc into the play position and automatically begins playback.
  • M.I.X. (Random Play): When activated, the microprocessor randomly selects tracks for playback. After all tracks have been played once, the M.I.X. feature transitions into Repeat Mode, starting a new random sequence.
  • Dual Pre-Amp Outputs: The 5903 offers dual outputs and a pre-amp fader, simplifying system expansion.
  • Music Sensor (Skip): This feature allows users to quickly navigate to the beginning of a desired music track in both play and pause modes. Pressing the "M.S. UP" (►►|) switch advances to the next track, while the "M.S. DowN" (◄◄|) switch replays the current track or moves to previous tracks.
  • Normal Play (Repeat All): After loading a disc, playback begins with the first track. Once all tracks have played, the player automatically returns to the beginning of the disc and restarts playback.
  • Pause: Temporarily stops playback while the disc remains inside the player. The PAUSE indicator illuminates. Pressing the play/pause switch again resumes playback.
  • Fast Forward (►►|) / Fast Backward (◄◄|): These functions operate in both play and pause modes. Holding down the respective switch rapidly moves the pickup forward or backward. Releasing the switch or lightly pressing it again resumes normal play.
  • Repeat (One): Continuously plays a single selected track. The "REPEAT" indicator appears on the display. Pressing the REPEAT switch a second time deactivates this function.
  • Track/Elapsed Time Display: The digital display shows the current track number and the elapsed time from the beginning of that track.
  • Eject: The EJECT switch partially ejects the disc. If a 5-inch disc remains in the eject status for more than 15 seconds, the self-loading system reloads it into PAUSE mode. For 3-inch discs, the eject status persists until the disc is fully pushed in.

Maintenance Features:

  • Replacing Fuse: Only replace blown fuses with those of the specified amperage (3A). If fuses repeatedly blow, check electrical connections for short circuits and the vehicle's voltage regulator.
  • Thermal Protection Circuit: In extreme temperatures (above 60°C), the circuit interrupts CD player operation to prevent overheating, displaying "--H".
  • Locking Mechanism: Before removing the unit from the dash, ensure the CD is ejected to prevent damage to the disc or laser mechanism.
  • Moisture Condensation: In humid climates, moisture may condense inside the player, causing playback issues. If this occurs, eject the disc and allow at least an hour for the moisture to dissipate before attempting playback again.
  • Proper Handling of Discs: Handle discs by the edges to avoid scratches and fingerprints. Do not affix tape, paper, or labels, or write on the disc. Store discs in their cases in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, and dust.
  • Cleaning Discs: Clean dirty discs with a soft, clean cloth, wiping from the center outwards. For heavily soiled discs, use a mild neutral detergent solution.
  • Damaged Discs: Do not attempt to play damaged, warped, or cracked discs, as this can severely harm the playback mechanism.
  • Quick Release Bracket (Q.R.B.): Alpine's exclusive Q.R.B. design allows for easy removal and insertion of the unit while retaining its memory. This feature helps prevent theft by allowing the unit to be hidden or taken with the owner. It is compatible with all Alpine Q.R.B. units that have RCA Connectors.
  • Installation Reinforcement: Always reinforce the removable head unit's bracket with the metal mounting strap to prevent loosening after repeated removal and insertion. Ensure the handle is fully down to lock the unit securely, especially to prevent dislodgement during vibrations or collisions.
  • Permanent Installation Option: For a permanent installation, the 18-pin plug cord can be removed from the bracket and connected directly to the unit chassis using the optional accessory Model 4100. Ensure the ground (black) lead is securely connected to the unit chassis.
