General Settings for iPad
Use the General settings to set up the iPad’s basic functionality for your everyday use. To
access the General settings on your iPad, click on the Settings app icon on the Home Screen
and then select General. The following is a list of the various General settings available with
a brief description.
General Settings Categories Descriptions
About: Information about downloaded content, apps, memory, iPad serial number and
model, your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth addresses, plus support, legal, and regulatory information.
Software Update: Use to check for available updates to iOS via iCloud.
Usage: Check the items that are backed up to iCloud and buy additional storage. Also turn
on the display in the status bar for indicating the percentage of available battery power.
Sounds: Set volume level and turn on alerts for system functions such as new e-mail and
keyboard taps.
Network: Configure and turn on/off virtual private and Wi-Fi networks.
Bluetooth: Turn Bluetooth on/off, enabling you to connect to other Bluetooth devices.
iTunes Wi-Fi Sync: Sync wirelessly with the copy of iTunes on a nearby computer when
connected to a Wi-Fi network.
Spotlight Search: Access settings for what types of content the iPad search feature
returns in search results.
Auto-Lock: Set the amount of time for inactivity at which the iPad automatically auto-
locks the screen.
Passcode Lock: Set a passcode and turn the feature on to require a passcode to unlock
the iPad.
Frame on/off: Set the iPad to erase all data after ten failed attempts to enter the
correct passcode.
Lock/Unlock: Control whether the use of a Smart Cover can be used to lock and unlock
your iPad.
Restrictions: Set restrictions on Safari, YouTube, and iTunes, as well as restrict
installation of applications and location services. Specify allowed content for music,
podcasts, movies, TV shows, and apps.
Lock Rotation/Mute: Set up the action taken when you move the Silent/Screen rotation
lock switch on the side of the iPad.
