The Atmotube PRO is an advanced, wearable, and portable air quality monitor designed for both indoor and outdoor use. It continuously tracks various air pollutants and environmental factors in real-time, alerting you when conditions become unsafe.
Function Description
The Atmotube PRO is engineered to provide comprehensive air quality monitoring. Its primary function is to detect and measure a range of harmful substances and environmental parameters that impact air quality and human well-being.
Air Pollutant Detection:
- Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): The device tracks VOCs, which are gases emitted from various sources like office equipment, paints, lacquers, cleaning supplies, and furnishings. Exposure to VOCs can have short and long-term health effects on the respiratory system, and prolonged exposure has been linked to increased risks of heart disease, stroke, liver and brain damage, and even cancer.
- Particulate Matter (PM): A key feature of the Atmotube PRO is its ability to detect different sizes of particulate matter, including PM1, PM2.5, and PM10. Particulate matter consists of tiny particles and droplets like dirt, dust, soot, smoke, and liquid compounds.
- PM10 (Coarse Dust Particles): These particles are less than or equal to 10 microns in size, about 30 times smaller than a human hair. They can evade nose hairs and be inhaled into the lungs. Sources include crushing/grinding operations, vehicle-stirred dust, pollen, mold, and plant/insect particles. Dangerous levels are considered 125 µg/m3 or more.
- PM2.5 (Fine Particles): These are 2.5 micrometers in diameter or smaller, produced by combustion sources like motor vehicles, power plants, residential wood burning, wildfires, and industrial processes. PM2.5 is more dangerous than PM10 because it can transfer from the lungs into the bloodstream, earning it the moniker "the invisible killer." Dangerous levels are considered 90 µg/m3 or more.
- PM1: This is a subset of PM2.5, referring to particulate matter with a diameter smaller than 1 micron. These extremely fine particles are even more likely to reach deeper into the respiratory system. PM1 is a byproduct of emissions from factories, vehicular pollution, construction activities, and road dust, and it tends to remain suspended in the air. Dangerous levels are considered 61 µg/m3 or more.
- Inhaling particulate matter can harm the lungs, especially for individuals with chronic lung disease or asthma, and can contribute to heart attacks, lung cancer, and low birth weight in babies. It often causes eye and throat irritation.
Environmental Parameter Monitoring:
- Humidity: The device monitors real-time humidity levels, helping users stay within their comfort zone.
- Temperature: It also tracks real-time temperature, contributing to overall comfort and awareness of environmental conditions.
- Atmospheric Pressure: The Atmotube PRO includes a barometric pressure sensor, providing real-time information and alerts for individuals sensitive to weather changes.
- Altimeter: This function complements the atmospheric pressure sensor, offering altitude readings.
Usage Features
The Atmotube PRO is designed for ease of use, with both on-device indicators and a comprehensive mobile application.
On-Device Interaction:
- Carabiner Mount: An elegant and functional carabiner clip allows for easy attachment and portability, making it convenient to carry the device wherever you go.
- RGB LED: A multi-colored LED on the device indicates different statuses and provides immediate feedback on air quality.
- Button: Pressing the button once displays the current Air Quality Score (AQS) on the LED.
- Airflow Mesh: This is the intake point for air, allowing the Atmotube PRO to sample and analyze the surrounding environment.
Air Quality Score (AQS) Notification:
The LED's color provides a quick visual cue of the current AQS, ranging from red (extremely poor) to blue (very clean). The color codes are:
- Blue: Good
- Green: Moderate
- Yellow: Polluted
- Orange: Very Polluted
- Red: Severely Polluted
Mobile Application (Atmotube App):
The Atmotube app, available for free on the App Store and Google Play, enhances the device's functionality and user experience. It supports devices running iOS 9+ and Android 4.3+ with Bluetooth LE.
- Easy Setup: After connecting the Atmotube PRO to a USB power source, the orange LED indicates it's on and charging. The device begins measuring air quality approximately 4 minutes after being turned on. Once fully charged, the LED turns green. To connect to the app, simply open it, press "Connect," and select your Atmotube from the list of available devices.
- Real-time Data Display: The app provides an instantaneous reading of the Air Quality Score (AQS), which combines VOCs and PM readings. The AQS ranges from 0 (extremely poor) to 100 (very clean).
- Detailed Readings: The app displays individual readings for PM1, PM2.5, PM10, and VOCs, offering a granular view of air quality.
- Alerts: Users can set alerts within the app to be notified when air quality deteriorates to a certain level.
- Measurements History: The Atmotube PRO continuously tracks air quality even when disconnected from your smartphone. Once reconnected, the app automatically downloads all missing data, providing a complete history of measurements.
- Barometer & Altimeter Readings: The app displays real-time barometric pressure and altitude, with alerts for significant weather changes.
- Temperature & Humidity Readings: Current temperature and humidity levels are shown, helping users monitor their comfort zone.
- Air Quality Map: With user permission, the app collects anonymous, aggregated environmental data to update and share a global air quality map. This feature allows users to see air quality trends in different locations and contributes to broader air pollution awareness.
Calibration and Accuracy:
The device starts measuring air quality immediately upon activation. However, for optimal accuracy and proper calibration, it requires approximately 12 hours to stabilize and provide the most precise readings.
Suggested Use Cases for Observation:
To observe the Atmotube PRO in action, several scenarios are recommended:
- Outdoor PM Changes: Measure air quality near a freeway or a street with heavy traffic, or walk along a construction site to see how the AQS changes due to particulate matter.
- Indoor PM and VOC Effects: In a small, closed room, spray cosmetics or house cleaning products to observe their effect on the AQS.
- Cooking Emissions: Check the air quality close to a stove while cooking to see how the Atmotube PRO reacts to cooking emissions.
Maintenance Features
The Atmotube PRO is designed for minimal maintenance, focusing on charging and app updates.
- Charging: The device is charged via a supplied USB Type-C cable. The LED indicator helps monitor the charging status: orange for charging and green for fully charged.
- App Updates: Regular updates to the Atmotube app ensure continuous improvement in functionality, accuracy, and user experience.
- Data Storage: The device stores air quality data internally, even when disconnected from the smartphone, ensuring no data is lost and can be downloaded upon reconnection.
The Atmotube PRO empowers users to easily monitor the air they breathe, understand potential risks, and take proactive steps to mitigate dangerous exposure, ultimately contributing to better health and environmental awareness.
