On th e road -
----------------
brake is not released until sufficient driving force has been built up
at the whee ls.
[ i ] Tips
For safety reasons, the parking brake is released automatically on ly
when the driver 's safety belt is engaged in the buckle . •
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an incline, do
the foll owing:
- Keep t he switch pulled and depress the acce lerator. The
pa rking brake stays ap p lied and preve nts the vehi cle
from rolling backward.
- You can release the switch once you are sure that you are
developing enoug h driving force at the wheels by
depress i ng the accelerator .
Depending on the weight of the rig (vehicle and trailer) and the
severity of the inc line, you may roll backwards as you start . You can
prevent rolling backwards by holding the parking brake switch
pulled out and accelerating - jus t as you would when star ting on a
hill with a conven t iona l hand brake . •
Emergency braking
In the even t that the conventional brake system fails or
locks.
- In an emergency, pull the switc h and cont inue to pull it to
slow your vehicle down w ith the parking brake.
- As soo n as yo u release the sw itch or acce lerate, the
braking process stops .
Controls and equip -
ment
If you pull the switch and hold it above a speed of about 5 mph (8
km/h), the emergency braking function is initia ted . The vehic le is
braked at all four whee ls by activating the hydraulic brake system.
The brake perfor mance is similar to making an emergency stop
=>&.
In order not to activate the emergency braking by mistake, an
audible warni ng to ne (buzzer) sou nds when the switch is pulled . As
soon as the swi tch is released, or the accelerator peda l is depress ed,
emergency brak ing stops .
& WARNING
Emergency braking should only be used in an emergency, when
the normal foot brake has failed or the brake pedal is obstructed .
Using the parking brake to perform emergency braking will slow
your vehicle dow n as if you had made a full brake applic ati on. The
law s of physics cannot be suspended even with ESP and it s asso-
ciat ed components {ABS, ASR, EDS). In corners and w hen road or
weather conditions are bad, a full brake application can cause the
vehicle to skid or the rear end to break aw ay - risking an
accident . •
Driver messages in the instrument cluster
Caution: Vehicle parked too steep
This message appears when the parking brake is app lied on an
inc line that exceeds about 30%.
In t his case the braking power of the parking brake may
not be
adequate
to prevent the vehicle from rolling unintentionally.
Please relea se parking brake
Please note that for safety reasons the parking brake is released
automatically only if the driver 's seat belt is fully engaged in the
buckle .
