Driving and environment
Break-in period
A new vehicle must be broken in, and t he break -in period should be
1,500 miles (2,500 kml. Do not use f ull acceleration for the first 600
miles (1,000 km) and do not exceed the maximum eng ine speed of
6,000 rpm You must also not use full acce leration between 600 and
1,200 miles (1,000 to 2,000 kml. From 1,200 to 1,500 mi les (2,000 to
2,500 km), you can gradual ly increase maximum engine speed to
8,250 rpm for brief periods.
During the first hours of operation, there is greater friction in the
engine and the t ransmissio n t han later when all the moving parts
have broken in .
The way you drive during the first 1,500 mi les (2,500 km) affects
eng ine quality. If you dr ive at moderate eng ine speeds thereafter,
particularly when the engine is cold, you reduce engine wear and
increase t he potential mi leage of the engine.
Do not drive at RPMs that are too
low. Shift down when the engine
is no longer running "smoothly". Extremely hig h RPMs are governed
automatically. •
Catalytic converter
You must use lead-free gasol ine in you r vehicle, otherw ise you will
destroy the catalytic converter .
Never run the fuel tank comp lete ly dry ; t he irregula r fuel supply
cou ld cause misfires. This allows unburned fuel into the exhaust
system, poss ibly resulti ng in over heat ing and damage to the cata -
lytic converter .
& WARNING
• Do not park or operate the vehicle in areas where the hot
exhaust system may come in conta ct wi th dry grass, brush, fuel
spills or othe r material which can cause a fire .
• Do not apply additional undercoating or rustproofing on or
near the exhau st manifold, exhau st pipe s, catalytic converter or
heat shields. During driving, the subst ance used for undercoating
could overheat and cause a fire .
0 Note
To ensure efficien t opera tion of the Emission Control System :
• Have your vehicle maintained properly and in accordance with
the service recommendat ions in your Warranty
& Maintenance
booklet.
• Lack of proper maintenance as we ll as improper use of the
vehic le wil l impair the function of the Emission Control System and
cou ld lead to da mage. •
Sporty driving
Warming up and cooling down
By carefully warm ing up and cool ing down your ve hicle, you can
help ensure that it is not overstressed unnecessari ly during sporty
driving .
When warm ing up, br ing the eng ine oi l up to a minimum tempera -
ture of 194°F (90 °C) at a maximum of 7,000 rpm. The tire traction will
also improve after warm ing up under a load.
