Battery
General information
All work on the battery requires technical knowledge.
The battery is located behind the cover in the luggage compart -
ment . Remove the cover by pushing it to the left and lifting it out .
The battery is practically ma intenance -free and is checked as part of
your vehicle 's maintenance services.
You are we ll advised to replace a battery that is older t han 5 years .
Di sc onn e ctin g th e b a tt ery t e rmin a ls
Some vehic le funct ions (power window regu lators, for example) are
lost if the battery termina ls are disconnected. These functions have
t o be relearned after the battery term inals are connected again. To
prevent this, the battery should only be disconnected from the
vehic le electr ical syst em when absolu t ely necessary for repairs .
V e h ic les n ot dri ve n f o r lo ng p e r iods
The battery becomes discharged due to quiescent current
consumers even when the vehic le is not used. With extended
per iods of non -use in the cold season, you should have the veh icle
battery removed by an authorized Audi dealer or qualified workshop
and stored in an frost -free place. This prevents the battery from
"freez ing" and thereby being destroyed. Dur ing the
war mer
seasons it is enough to disconnect the battery negative terminal.
Occasionally charge a disconnected battery.
Winter operation
The cold time of year places a special strain on the battery, resu lt ing
in reduced starting power . So before the cold weathe r starts, have
the battery inspected and charged as necessary.
Replacing the b a ttery
The new battery must have the same capacity, voltage (12 volts),
amperage, construction and plug sealing, as the original battery.
Specifications are listed on the battery housing. Batteries specially
developed by Audi fu lfi ll the maintena nce, output, and safety
requirements.
We recommend that you use maintenance -free or
cycle-resis-
tant/ leak-proof
batteries according to the sta ndards TL 825 06 (from
December 1997) and VW 7 50 73 (from August 2001 ).
Since the vehicle batt ery is difficult to reach, we recommend having
the battery replaced by an authorized Audi dealer or other qualified
wo rkshop .
& WARNING
• All work on the batter y requires technical knowledge . Please
conta ct an author ized Audi dealer or another author ized facility
for questions about t he battery - danger of acid burn s and explo-
sion hazard !
• The battery must not be opened ! Do not try to change the
batt ery's liquid level, othe rwise detonating gas w ill escape from
the battery - explo sion hazard!
0 Note
• Batt ery holder and terminals always have to be secured cor rectly .
• Before all work on the battery follow the wa rnings below~ & in
"Working on the battery" on
page 204 .
<i> For the sake of the environment
Because of the proble m of proper disposal of a battery, we recom -
mend your authorized Audi dealer change the battery for you.
Batt eries contain sulfuric acid and lead and must always be
disposed of proper ly in comp liance with all environmental regula-
t ions. Dispos ing of vehicle batteries imp roperly is very dangerous to
the environment. Make sure that the removed battery cannot over -
balance, otherwise sulfuric acid might escape! •
