maneuver.
Safety belts used prope rly can make a big d iffe rence. Safety be lts
help to keep passenge rs in their seats, gradually reduce energy levels
applied to the body in an accident, and he lp prevent t he uncontrolled
movemen t that can cause serious injuries. In addit ion, safety belts
red uce the danger of be ing thrown out of the vehicle.
Safe ty be lts at t ach pa ssengers to the car and g ive them the benefit of
being slowed down more gently or "softly" through the "give" in the
safety belts, crush zones and other safety feat ures engineered int o
today's vehicles. By "absorb ing" the kinetic energy over a longe r
per iod of time, the safe ty belts make the forces on the body more
"tolerable" and less likely to cause injury.
Although these examples are based on a fronta l collision, safety belts
can also s ubstant ially red uce t he risk of injury in othe r kinds of
crashes. So, whether you 're on a long trip or just going to the corner
sto re, a lways buckle up a nd make sure othe rs do, t oo. Accident statis-
tics show that vehicle occupants properly wearing safety be lts have a
lower risk of being injur ed and a muc h bet t er chance of s urviving an
accident . Properly using safety be lts also greatly increases the ability .,_
