Automatic safety belt retractors
Every safety be lt is equipped with an automatic be lt retractor on the
sho ulder bel t . This feat ure loc ks t he be lt when t he belt is pulled out
fast, during hard bra king and in an accident. The belt may also loc k
when you dr ive up or down a steep hill o r t hrough a sha rp curve .
During norma l driving the belt lets you move freely.
Switchable locking feature
Every safety be lt except the one on the driver seat is eq uipped with a
swit chable locking fea tur e that
must be used when the safety belt is
used to attac h a child seat. Be sure to read the important information

Improperly positioned safety belts can cause seriou s injury in an
accident
=> page 11 5, "Safety belt position ".
Safety belt s offer optimum protection only when the seat back
is upright and belts are properly positioned on the body.
Never attach the safety belt to the buckle for another seat.
Attaching the belt to the wrong buckle will reduce safet y belt
effectivene ss and can cause seriou s personal injury.
A passenger who is not properly restrained can be seriou sly
injured by the safety belt itself when it moves from the stronger
parts of the body into critical areas like the abdomen.
Always lock the convertible locking retractor when you are
se curing a child seat in the vehicle =>
page 152 .

Use the heig ht adjustment to change the pos it ion of the shoulder

& WARNING
Improperly positioned safety belts can cau se seriou s per sonal
injury in an accident.
The shoulder belt port ion of the safety belt must be positioned
over the middle of the occupant's shoulder and never across the
neck or throat .
The safety belt must lie flat and snug on the occupant's upper
body => fig . 94 . Pull on the belt to tighten if necessary .
The lap belt portion of the safet y belt mu st be positioned as
low as possible across pelvis and never over th e abdomen . Make
sure the belt lies flat and snug => fig. 94. Pull on the belt to
tighten if necessary .
A loose-fitting safet y belt can cause serious injuries by shifting
it s position on your body from the strong bones to more vulner-
able , soft tissue and cau se seriou s injury. ..,_
