Child restraints on the front seat - some
important things to know
- Be sure to read the important information and heed the
WARNINGS for important details about children and
Advanced Airbags =>
page 141.
Even though your veh icle is equ ipped with an Advanced Airbag
System, make certain that a ll children, especia lly those
12 years and
younger, are prope rly restra ined for their age and size. The a irbag on
the passenger side makes the front seat a potentia lly dangerous
place for a child to ride. The front seat is not the safest place fo r a
child in a forward-facing ch ild safety seat . It can be a very dangerous
place for an infant or a ch ild in a rearward -fa cing seat.
The Advanced Airbag System in your veh icle has been certified to
comply with the requirements of United States Federa l Motor Vehicle
Safety Standard
208 as applicable at the time your vehicle was manu-
factured.
The St andard requires t he front airbag on the passenger side t o be
turned off ("suppressed") if a child up to abou t one year of age
restra ined in one of t he rea r-facing or forward-fa cing infant
restra ints listed in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard
208 with
which the Advanced Airbag System in your vehicle was certified has
been installed on the front passenger seat . For a listing of the ch ild
restraints that were used to certify compliance with the US Safety
Standard~
page 143 .
The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light in the instrument pane l tells you
when the front Advanc ed Airbag on the passe nger side has been
turned off by the electronic control unit .
Each time you turn on the ignition, t he
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
light will come on for a few seconds and:
• will stay on if the front passenger seat is not occupied,
• will stay on if there is a small ch ild or child rest ra int on the front
passenger seat,
Safety first
• will go off if the front passenger seat is occup ied by an adult as
reg iste red by t he we igh t- sens ing ma t ~
page 130, "Moni t or ing t he
Advanced Airbag System" .
The
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes on when t he control unit
de t ects a total weig ht on t he front passenger sea t that req uires t he
front airbag to be t urned off.
If t he t otal weight on t he front passenger sea t is more t han that of a
typical 1 year-o ld child but less than the weight of a small adu lt , the
front airbag on the passenger side can deploy (t he
PASSENGER AIR
BAG OFF
light does not come on) . If the PASSENG ER AIR BAG OFF
light does not come on, the front airbag on the passenger side has
not been turned off by t he e lectron ic cont rol un it and can deploy if
the control unit senses an impact t hat meets the conditions stored in
its memory.
For example, the airbag may deplo y if:
• a small child that is heavier than a typical 1 year-old child is on the
front passenger seat (rega rd less of whether the ch ild is in one of the
child safety seats listed ~
page 143), or
• a child who has outgrown child restraints is on the front passenger
seat .
If t he front passenger a irbag is t urned off, the PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF
light in the center of the instrument panel will come on and stay
on.
The front airbag on the passenger side may
not dep loy (the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not illuminate and stay lit) even
if a small adult or teenager, or a passenge r who is not sitt ing upright
with their back against a non-reclined backrest with their feet on the
vehicle floo r in front of the seat is on the front passenger seat
~
page 102, "Proper seating pos ition for the dr iver".
If the front passenger a irbag dep loys, t he Federa l Sta ndard req uires
the airbag to meet the "low risk" deployment criter ia to reduce the
risk of injur y th rough int eraction with the a irbag. "Low risk" deploy -
ment occurs in those cras hes that take place at lower decelerat ions as .,_
