the seat's fore and aft adjustment range, as far away from the

Advanced front airbag system and children
Your vehicle is equ ipped wit h an "Advanced Airbag System" in compli-
ance with United States Federa l Moto r Vehicle Safety Standard
(FMVSS) 20 8 as a ppli cable at t he time your vehicle wa s m a nufa c-
tured.
The Advanced Airbag system in your veh icle has been cert ified to
meet the "low-r isk" requirements for 3- and 6- year-o ld childre n on
the passenger side and small ad ults o n the dr iver side . The low risk
dep loymen t criter ia are intended to red uce the risk of injury t hrough
interaction with t he airbag that can occur, for examp le, by being too
close t o the st eeri ng wheel and instr ume nt pane l whe n the airbag
inf lates. In addition, the system has been certified to comp ly with the
"supp res sion" requirement s of the Safety Stan da rd, t o t ur n off the
front airbag for infants up to 12 mont hs who are restrained on the
fr ont passe nger sea t in chil d res t raints t hat ar e list ed in t he St an -
dard .
Even thoug h your vehicle is equ ipped with an Advanced Airbag
system , a child should always ride in t he sea t properly restrained for
its age a nd size . The airbag on the passenger side makes the fro nt
seat a potentially dangerous place for a child to ride. The front seat is
not the safest place for a chi ld in a forward-facing child safety seat . It
can be a
very dangerous place fo r an infant or a larger child in a rear -
wa rd-facing seat .
Advanced Airbags and the weight-sensing
mat in the front seat
The Advanced Airbag System in your ve hicle detects t he presence of
an infa nt or ch ild in a child res t raint on t he front passenger sea t using
the we ight -sens ing mat in the seat cushion a nd the sensor be low t he
safety belt latch on the front passenge r seat that meas ures the
tension on t he safety belt .
The weight-sensing mat measures tota l we ight of the child and the
child safety sea t an d a child bla nke t on the fro nt passe nger se at . The
we ight on the front passenger seat is related to the design of the
child res t rai nt and it s "foot print", the size and shape of t he bot t om
of the child restraint as it sits on the seat. The weight of a child
restrain t a nd its "foo t pr int"
vary for different kinds of child res t ra ints
and for the different models of the same kind of child res t ra int
offere d by child rest raint ma nufacturers.
The we ight ra nges for the individual types, makes and models of ch ild
restraints that the NHTSA has specified in the Safety Standard
t oge th er w it h t he weig ht rang es of typical infan t s a nd typical 1 year-
old child have been stored in the control unit of the Advanced Airbag
System . When a child res t raint is being use d on t he fron t passenge r
sea t with a typical 1 year -old child, the Advanced Airbag System
compa res the we igh t meas ur ed by t he weigh t sensin g ma t with the
info rmation stored in the elec t ron ic cont rol un it .
The e lectronic control unit also reg isters the tens ion on the front
passenge r safety belt. The t en sion on t he safety belt for t he fr ont
passenge r seat will be diffe rent for an adult who is prope rly using the .,_
