safety belt as compared to the tens ion on the be lt when it is used to
at tach a child res t rai nt t o t he seat. The sensor be low t he latc h fo r the
safety belt for the front seat passenger measures the tension on the
belt. The input from this sensor is then used with the weight to
"decide", whet her there is a chi ld restra int with a typical 1 year-old
child on t he front passenger seat and whether or not the airbag must
be tu rned off. •
Child restraints and Advanced Airbags
Regardless of the child restrai nt that you use, make sure that it has
been certified to meet United States Federa l Motor Vehicle Safety
Standards and has been certified by its manufacture r fo r use with a n
airbag. If in exceptiona l circumstances you must use it on the front
passenge r seat, caref ully read all of the info rmation on child safety
and Advanced Airbags and heed a ll of the applicab le WARNINGS.
Make certain that the child rest raint is cor rect ly recogn ized by the
we ight-sensing mat inside the fro nt passenger seat , that the front
passenge r a irbag is turned off and t hat the airbag status is always
correctly s ignaled by the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light .
Many types and models of child restraints have been available over
the yea rs, new mode ls ar e introduced regula rly incorporating new
and improved designs and older models are taken out of product ion.
Child restra int s are not standard ized. Child rest raints of the same
type typica lly have different weights and sizes and different 'foot-
pr ints,' t he size and shape of t he bot t om of t he child res t rai nt t ha t
sits on the seat, when they are installed on a vehicle seat. These
differences ma ke it virtually impossib le to cert ify comp liance with
the requ irements for advanced a irbags with each and every child
restra int that has ever been so ld in the past or w ill be so ld over t he
cou rse of the useful life of you r veh icle.
For this reason, the United States Nationa l Highway Traff ic Safety
Adm inist ration has published a list of specific type, makes an d
mode ls of child restra ints that must be used to cert ify compliance of
t he Advan ced Airbag System in your veh icle wit h t he suppression
