Notice about data recorded by
vehicle control modules
Your vehicle is not equipped with an Event Data Recorder (EDR),
installed by some manufacturers for the express purpose of
capturing data for retrieva l after an accident or crash event. ED R's are
sometimes called "crash recorders".
Some state laws restrict the retrieval or downloading of data stored
by ED R's that were ins t alled in a vehicle for t he express purpose of
retrieving data after an acc ident or crash event w ithout the owner's
consent .
Alt hough your vehicle is not equipped wit h an EDR, it is equipped w it h
a number of e lectronic control modu les for various vehicle systems
such as, for example , eng ine function, emission control, as well as for
the airbags and safety be lt s.
These electronic contro l modules a lso record vehicle-re lated data
dur ing normal vehicle operation for diagnostic and repair purposes .
The recording capacity of the e lectronic control mod ules is limited to
data (no sound is reco rded) and only a sma ll amount of data is actu-
ally recorded over a very limited period of time and stored when a
system fault or other condition is sensed by a contro l unit. Some of
the data then stored may relate to veh icle speed, direction, braking
as well as restra int system use a nd pe rformance in the event of a
crash or other condit ion. Stored data can only be read and down-
loaded with spec ial equipment .
Electronic Stabilization Program
(ESP)
The Electronic Stabilization Program increases driving
stability.

The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), Electron ic Differe nt ial Lock (EDS)
and Anti-Slip Regulation System (ASR) are int egrated in the Elec-
t ronic Stab ilizat io n Prog ram (ESP). It increases cont rol over t he
vehicle in handling conditions close to the lim it of "grip" , such as
when accelerating and cornering.
It red uces the risk of skidding under
all road cond itions and at a ll speeds and improves vehicle stability .
When road conditions are poor, ESP makes it easier to start from a
comp lete stop as well as acce lerate and drive up hills. ESP switches o n
automatically when you start the engine . It s hou ld normally be acti -
vated at all times because this e nsu res optim um vehicle stability.
Critical driving situations
With an oversteering vehicle (the vehicle turns too sharply a nd the
rear w heels slide toward the outside of a curve) , ESP primarily brakes
the outside front wheel, with an understeeri ng ve hicle (the ve hicle
does not turn sharp ly enoug h and pushes out of a curve) it bra kes the .,_
