• Operate the rear spoiler manually only when the engine compart-
ment lid is closed, otherwise there is a risk of damage.
[I) Tips
Clean the spoiler compartment every 2 to 3 months. The spoiler
compartment must always be free of ice, snow, leaves or other
debris. •
Braking
New brake pads
During the first 250 m iles (400 km), new brake pads do not possess
their full braking effect, they have to be"broken in" first. You can
compensate for this slight ly red uced b raking power by pushing
harder on the brake pedal. Avoid heavy braking loads during the
brea k-in period.
Operating conditions and driving habits
The brakes on today's automob iles are still subject to wea r,
depending largely on operating conditions and driving habits =>& .
On veh icles that are either driven mostly in stop -and- go city traffic o r
are driven hard, the brake pads should be checked by your author ized
Audi dea ler more often t ha n specified in the
Warranty & Mainte-
nance booklet .
Failure to have your brake pads inspected can result
in reduced brake performance.
On steep slopes, you shou ld use the brak ing effect of the engine . This
way, you prevent unnecessary wear on the brake system. If you must
use your brakes, do not ho ld the brakes down continuously. Pump the
brakes at intervals.
Moisture or road salt
At speeds above 70 mph (110 km/h) and with the windshield wipers
switched
on (at least interval stage 4), the brake pads are br iefly
applied aga inst the brake discs. This occurs at regular intervals

without the driver noticing and provides for better brake response
time unde r wet cond itions .
Under certain cond it ions, for example, when driving through water or
very heavy rain, or even after washing your vehicle, the braking effect
can be reduced due to moisture (or in freezing conditions ice) on the
brake pads. A few cautious brake applications should dry off the
bra ke pads or remove any ice coatings.
The effect iveness of the brakes can be reduced when the vehicle is
driven on a sa lt -covered road and the brakes are not used. Likewise,
you clean off accumulated salt coat ing from brake d iscs and pads
with a few cautious applications of the brake =>& .
Corrosion
The re may be a tendency for dirt to build up on t he brake pads and
corrosion to form on the discs if the car is not dr iven regularly or only
for short trips with litt le use of the brakes.
If the brakes are not used frequently, or if corrosion has formed o n
the discs, it is advisable to clean off the pads and discs by braking
fi rmly a few tim es from a moderately hig h speed=> & .
Faults in the brake system
If you should notice a sudden increase in brake pedal travel, then one
of the two brake circuits may have failed. Drive immediately to the
nearest qualified workshop to have the damage repaired. Drive at
reduced speed on the way there and anticipate longer stopping
distances an d higher ped al pressu re =>& .
Low brake fluid level
Malfunctions can occur in the brake system if the brake fluid level is
too low. The brake fluid level is monitored e lectronically .
Brake power assist unit
The brake power assist unit increases the pressure that you generate
with the brake pedal. It works on ly whe n the eng ine is runn ing . .,_
