• If the power steeri ng system has a leak or is defective, you should
im media t ely contac t a qualifi ed workshop.
• The power steering system requires a special hydraulic fl uid. The
powe r st eering fl uid reservoir is located in t he engine compar t me nt.
The correct hydraulic flu id level is important for proper operation of
t he power st eering syst em. The powe r st eering fluid level is checked
according to the Audi maintenance service schedule. •
Driving with your quattro®
With All Wheel Drive, all four wheels are driven.
General information
With All Wheel Drive, power is distributed to all four wheels. This
happens automatically depending on your dr iving style and the road
conditions at the time. See also => page
158.
Winter t ires
W hen driving in the winter, your vehicle with All Whee l Drive has an
advantage, even w ith regula r t ires. In winter road cond it ions it may
be advisable to mount winter tires (or all-season tires) for improved
dr iveability and braking: these tires must be mo unt ed on
all four
wheels .
Snow chains
Where snow chains are mandatory on certain roads, this normally
also applies to vehicles with All W heel Drive => page
213, "Snow
chains".
Repl a cing wheels / tire s
Only the wheel/tire sizes specified by the manufacturer may be used
on vehicles w ith all-wheel dr ive=> page
208 .
Safety first Vehicle operation
ln. WARNING
• Always adju st your driving to road and traffic conditions . Do
not let the extra safet y aff orded by All Wh eel Drive tempt you into
taking extra risks.
• Although All Wh eel Drive is very effe ctive, alway s rememb er
that braking capacity is limit ed by t ire traction . You should there -
fore not drive at excessive speeds on icy or slippery road surfaces.
• On wet road surfaces, be careful not to drive too fast because
the fr ont wheel s could begin to slid e on top of the water (aqua -
planing ). If this should occur, you will have no warning from a
sudden increase in engine speed as with a front-wheel drive
vehicle. Always drive at speeds which are suit ed to th e road condi-
tions. - risk of crash. •
Dry sump lubrication
High lateral and longitudinal forces affect the engine and the vehicle
dur ing sporty dr iving . Dry sump lubr ication ensures that your engine
is supp lied with oi l and properly lubricated even under these condi -
tions.
In a "normal" vehicle the oil pump sends the oil from the oil pan to
the lubricat ion points in t he engine. The oil t hen retu rns t o the oil
pan. In extreme situat ions, the oil pump may draw in air, which
results in insufficient oi l pressure.
W ith dry sump lubrication , the oil is not in the oil pan (it is "d ry"), but
in a separate oil tank. While one pump supplies the engine with oil, a
second pump suctions the oil out of the engine and retu rns it to the
oil tank . Because the oi l tank is ta ll and narrow, oil pressure is
consta nt even under ext reme conditions .
In addition, the oil pan in vehicles with dry sump lubrication is notice -
ably shall ower. This all ows the engine to be installed lower in the
vehicle, bring ing down the center of gravity. This improves your
vehicle's handling . •
