Fuel supply
Using the right fuel helps keep the environment clean and
prevents engine damage.
Fuel recommendation
The f uel recommended for your vehicle is unleaded premium grade
gasoline. See also :::::>
page 244, "Dat a". Audi recommends using TOP
TIER Detergent Gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 91 AKI (95
RON). For more inform at ion on TOP TIER Det ergent Gasoline, please
go to the official website (www.topt iergas .com) .
The recommended gasoline octane rating for your engine can also be
found on a labe l located on the inside of t he fue l fille r flap. This rat ing
may be specified as AKI or RON.
Your vehicle may also be operat ed using unleaded reg ular gas oline
with a minim um octane rating of87 AKI/91 RON. However, using 87
AKI/91 RON octane fue l will slig htly reduce engi ne performance.
Use unleaded gasoline only . Unleaded gaso line is available
througho ut the USA, Canada, and in most Europea n count ries. We
reco mmend t hat you do not t ake your vehicle t o areas or coun t ries
where unleaded gasoline may not be availab le.

Octane rating
Octane ratin g indicat es a gaso line's ability to res ist eng ine damaging
"knock" caused by premature ignition and detonat ion. Therefore,
buying t he correct grade of gasol ine is very imp ort ant to help prevent
poss ible engine damage and a loss of eng ine performance .
Gasoline most common ly used in the United States and Canada has
the following octa ne rat ings that can usually be fou nd on th e filler
pum p:
• Premium Grade: 9 1 - 96 AKI
• Regular Grade: 87 - 90 AKI
Explanation of the abbreviat ions:
AKI= Anti Knock I ndex= (R+M)/2 = (RON+MON)/2
RON = Research Octane Number
MON= Mot or Octane Number.
0 Note
• Do not use any fuel wit h octane rat ings lower t han 87 AKI or 9 1
RON othe rwise expens ive engine da mage will occur.
• Do
not use leaded gasoline! The use of leaded gaso line will
severely damage your vehicle's cata lytic convert er and it s ab ility t o
cont rol exhaust emissions . •
Blended gasoline
Use of gasoline containing alcohol or MTBE (methyl
tertiary butyl ether)
You may use unleade d gasoline blended with alco hol or MTBE
(common ly refe rred to as oxygena t es) if the blende d mixt ure meets
the following criter ia:
Blend of gasoline methanol (wood alcohol or methyl alcohol)
• Anti-knock index must be 87 AKI or higher.
• Blend must cont ain no more tha n 3% metha nol.
• Blend must contain more than 2% co-solvents.
Blend of gasoline and ethanol (grain alcohol or ethyl alcohol)
• Ant i-knock index must be 87 AKI or higher.
• Blend must not cont ain more t han 10% et hanol.
