Battery
General information
All work on the battery requires technical knowledge.
The battery is located behind the cover in the luggage compartment.
Remove the cover by pushing it to the left and lifting it out .
The battery is pr actically ma intenance-free and is chec ked as part of
your vehicle's ma intenance serv ices.
You a re well advised to rep lace a battery t hat is o lder than 5 years.
Di sco nne cting the b at t er y termi n al s
Some vehicle funct ions (power window regulato rs, fo r example) are
lost if the battery termina ls are disconnected. These functions have
t o be re learned after t he battery termina ls are connected again. To
prevent th is, the battery should only be disconnected from the
vehicle electrica l system when absolute ly necessary for repairs .
V e hi cles not dri v en for lo ng peri o ds
The battery becomes discharged due to quiescent current consumers
even when the vehicle is not used. With extended periods of non-use
in the
cold season, you should have the ve hicle battery removed by an
author ized Aud i dealer or qual ified workshop and stored in an frost-
free place . This prevents the battery from "freezing" and thereby
being destroyed . During the
warmer seasons it is enough to discon-
nect the battery negative terminal. Occasionally charge a discon -
nected batte ry.
Winter operation
The cold time of year places a special stra in on the battery, resulting
in reduced starting power. So before the co ld weather starts, have the
battery inspected and charged as necessary .
Repl a cing the battery
The new battery mu st have the same capacity, voltage (12 volts),
amperage, construction and plug sealing, as the original battery .
Safety first
Specifications are listed on the battery housing . Batteries spec ially
developed by Audi fulfill the ma inte nance, ou t pu t , and safety
requirements .
We recommend that you use maintenance-free or
cycle-resis·
t ant / leak-proof
batteries accord ing to the standa rds TL 8 2 5 06
(from December 1997) and VW 7 SO 73 (from August 2001).
Since the veh icle batte ry is diffic ult to reach , we recommend having
the battery rep laced by an authorized Audi dealer or other qualified
works hop .
& WARNING
All work on t he battery requires t echnical knowl edge. Please
contact an authorized Audi dealer or another authorized facility
for question s about the batt ery· danger of acid burns and explo-
sion hazard!
The bat tery must not be opened! Do not try to chang e the
battery's liquid level, otherwise detonating gas will escape from
the battery · explosion hazard!
0 Note
Battery ho lder and term inals always have to be sec ured correctly.
Before all work on the battery follow the
warnings below=> & in
"Wo rking on t he battery" on page 194.
<i> For the sake of the environment
Because of the problem of prope r disposal of a ba ttery, we recom-
mend your author ized Audi dealer change the battery for you.
Batteries contain sulfuric acid and lead and must a lways be d isposed
of properly in compliance w it h all env ironmental regulat ions .
Disposing of vehicle batteries improperly is ve ry dangerous to the
environment . Make sure that the removed battery cannot overbal-
ance, otherwise sulfuric acid might escape!
