Always use new engine coolant when refilling.
Do not fill coolant above the "max" ma rk. Ex-
cess coolant will be forced out through the
press ure re lief valve in t he cap when t he en-
g ine becomes hot.
~
WARNING
- The cooling system is under press ure and
can get very hot. Reduce the risk of
sca lding from hot coo lant by following
these steps.
- Turn off the engine and allow it to cool
down.
- Protect your face, hands and arms from
escaping fluid a nd steam by cover ing
the cap wit h a large, thick rag.
- Turn the cap slowly and very ca refully
in a cou nte r-clockw ise d irect ion wh ile
apply ing light, downwa rd press ure on
the top of the cap.
- To avoid being burned, do not sp ill an-
tifreeze or coolant on the exhaust sys -
tem or hot engine parts. Under certain
conditions, the ethylene glyco l in en-
g ine coolant can catch fire.
- Antifreeze is poisonous . Always store an-
t ifreeze in its or iginal container and we ll
out of the reac h of children.
- If you drain the coolant, it must be
caught and safely stored in a proper con-
tainer clearly marked "poison".
(D Note
- Coolant po llutes the environment and
could cause an engine fire. Excess coo l-
ant will be forced out through the pres -
sure relief valve in the cap when the en-
gine becomes hot.
- If, in an emergency, only water can be
added, the correct ratio between water
and antifreeze
c;, page 171 must be re-
stored as soon as poss ible.
@ For the sake of the environment
Drained coolant should not be reused. Al-
ways dispose of used coolant while observ-
ing all environmental regulations .

Brake fluid
Have the brake fluid changed by an experi-
enced technician.
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air. If
the water content in the brake fluid is too
high, corrosion in the brake system may resu lt
after a period of time. The boiling point of the
brake flu id will also decrease considerably and
dec rease braking performance.
Therefore, the brake fluid must be changed
every two years . Always use new brake f luid
which conforms to Federal Motor Vehicle
Standard "FMVSS 116 DOT 4" .
Brake fluid is replaced accord ing to the Audi
maintenance service schedule . Your author-
ized Audi dealer is equipped with the necessa-
ry specia l tools and replacement parts, has
the necessa ry expertise, and can dispose of
t he used fluid.
.&_ WARNING
- Brake fl uid is poisono us. It mus t be stor-
ed only in the closed or iginal container
out of the reach of children!
- Brake failure can resu lt from old or inap-
propriate brake flu id . Observe these pre -
cautions:
- Use only brake fluid that meets SAE
spec ificat ion
J 1703 and conforms to
Federa l Moto r Vehicle Standard 116 .
Always chec k with your authori zed Audi
dealer t o make sure yo u a re using the
corre ct brake fluid. The cor rect type of
brake f luid is also ind icated on the
brake f luid rese rvoir.
- The brake fluid mus t be new. Heavy use
of the brakes can cause a vapor lock if
the brake fluid is left in the system too
long. This can seriously affect the effi-
ciency of the brakes as well as your
safety. This cou ld result in an accident .
([) Note
Brake fluid will damage the paint of your
vehicle.
