The illumination for t he instrument cluster
lights up whenever you switch on t he ignition
with the
vehicle headlights off . The gauges
are a lso illumina t ed when t he lights a re
turned o n.
Engine oil temperature display
The engine oil temperature display ¢ page 8,
fig. 3 only ope rates with the ignition on . To
prevent engine damage, please obse rve the
following importa nt points concerning the
temperature ranges .
Cold range
If the needle is at the bottom of the gauge,
t he engine oil has not reac hed operat ing tem-
perature yet . Avoid high eng ine speeds, full
t hrottle applicat ions and heavy eng ine loads .
Normal range
The eng ine has reached ope rating tempera-
ture when the needle moves into the center of
the gauge under normal driving cond itions .
The needle may move high er on the ga uge
with heavier e ngine load at hig h outs ide tem-
per atures. This is not a cau se for con cern as
long as t he . indicator light in the disp lay
does not flash.
Warning light.
If the symbol . in t he display flashes, ei-
t he r th e e ngine oil te m pera t ure is too high or
t he engine o il level is too low¢
page 178 .
If the needle is well in the uppe r area of the
gauge, the e ngine oil temperature is too high .
Stop the vehicle, switch the engine off and
allow it to cool.
If th e war ning ligh t comes on
again afte r driving a short distance, contact
an aut horized Audi dea le r.
