Power steering
When the engine is running, power steering
makes it easier for the driver to steer.
Power steering helps the driver steer the vehi-
cle with little physical effort .
If the engine is not runn ing, the power steer-
ing system is also not wo rking. In t his case,
you will find it extreme ly difficult to turn the
steering whee l.
If you t ur n t he steering fully t o t he left or
right when the vehicle is stationary, you place
a very heavy load on t he power steering sys-
tem . Turning the steering wheel fu lly to the
left or right will cause noise in the system . It
also reduces engine idle speed.
(D Note
Do not hold the steering turned fully to
the left or right f or more than 10 seconds
when t he engine is running. There is a risk
of damage to the power steeri ng system .
@ Tips
- In the event of a power steering system
failure, or if the engine is not running
(while being towed), you wi ll st ill be able
to steer the vehicle. However, you will re-
quire more effort to do so.
- If the power steer ing system has a leak
or is defective, you should immed iately
contact a qualif ied workshop.
- The power stee ring system requires a
special hydraulic f luid. The powe r stee r-
ing fl uid reservoir is located in the en-
gine compar t ment . The cor rect hydra uli c
f luid level is important for proper opera-
tion of the power steering syst em. The
power steer ing fl uid level is checked ac-
cord ing to the Audi maintenance service
schedule.
Dry sump Lubrication
High lateral and long itud inal forces affect the
engine and the vehicle during sporty driving.
Ory sump lubr ication ensures that your engine
Int e llig e nt technolog y 149
is supplied wit h oil and properly lubricated
even under these conditions .
In a "no rma l" vehicle the oil pump sends the
oil from t he oil pan t o the lubr ication points in
t he engine. The oi l then ret urns to the oil pan.
In extreme situations , the oil pump may draw
in air, which results in insufficient oi l pressure.
Wi t h dry sump lubri cat ion, t he oil is not in the
oi l pan (it is "dry"), but in a separate oil tank.
While one pump supplies t he engine with oil ,
a second pump suctions the oil out of the en-
gine and returns it to the oil tank. Because the
oil tank is tall and narrow, oil pressure is con-
stant even under extreme conditions .
In addition, the oi l pan in vehicles with dry
sump lubrication is noticeab ly shallower. This
allows t he engine to be installed lower in the
vehicle , bring ing down the center of gravity .
This imp roves your vehicle's handling .
Driving with your
quattro ®
With all-wheel drive, all four wheels are driv-
en.
General information
With all -wheel drive, powe r is distr ibuted to
al l four wheels. This happens autom atic ally
dependi ng on your driving style and the road
conditions at the t ime . See also ¢
page 144.
The all-whee l dr ive concept is designed for
high engine power. Your vehicle is except ion-
ally powe rf ul and has excellen t driving charac-
teristics both under normal driving cond itions
and on snow and ice. Always read and follow
safety precaut ions ¢ &. .
Winter tires
When dr iving in the win t er, your vehicle wit h
all- wheel drive has an advantage, even w it h
regular tires. I n winter road conditions it may
be advisable to mount winter tires (or all-sea -
son tires) for improved driveability and brak-
ing : these tires must be mounted on
all four
wheels . See also¢ page 203, Winter tires. .,..
