The engine in your Audi needs the right kind
of oil.

The engine in your Audi is a soph istica t ed
powerp lant t hat was built to exacting specifi-
cations . This engine needs the right kind of
engine oil that meets specifications regarding
quality and viscosity so that it can run
smoothly and reliably. Choosing the right oi l
and changing oil within the time and mileage
intervals printed in your vehicle's Warranty
&
Maintenance book let matters a lot more to-
day than it did years ago. Audi has developed
a special quality standa rd for engine oil that
will help assure t hat your vehicle's engine will
get t he lubricat ion it needs for prope r opera-
tion.
Modern engine lubrication has taken a quan-
t um leap in t he last few years. Many synthetic
oils availa ble today provide bet ter engine lu-
bricat ion that can outlast t raditional pet role -
um-based oils, making them a smart choice
for use throughout the life of your Audi.
Whether you use synt hetic or petroleum-
based engine oil, the oil that you use must
conform to Audi's oil quality standard VW S02
00 to help keep your vehicle's engine running

smooth ly and help prevent the f ormat ion of
harmful deposits, sometimes call ed "sludge,"
that over time can lead to expensive repairs.
At the time of prin ti ng, engine oils available in
t he U.S. and Canada that meet the exacting
specifications of Audi oil standard VW 502 00
are synt het ic engine oi ls. This does not mean,
however, that every synthetic engine oil will
meet Audi oil standard VW 502 00. So always
be sure that you use an approved oil.
To help prevent the formation of harmfu l de-
posits use on ly oil with the following specifi-
cations pr inted on the oil conta iner:

Viscosity
Engine oils are graded according to thei r vis-
cosity. The proper viscosity grade oil fo r yo ur
engine depends on climactic or seasonal con-
ditions where yo u drive. You must use oil w it h
a viscosity grade of SAE 5W-30 all temper a-
tu re ranges f or norma l driving condi t ions.
Because engine oil that meets the Audi oil
standard may not be availab le everywhere
whe n you need it, we strong ly recom mend
t hat you always carry wit h you an ext ra quart
(liter) of oil that expressly conf orms to the
VW 502 00, in case you have to top
off the oil
whi le on the road.
Only if the level of t he oil is at or below t he
minimum mark on the oil dipstick - and no oil
that expressly conforms to Audi oi l VW 502
00 is available - may you top
off with a high
quality engine oil , preferab ly synthetic-based,
that meets ACEA A3 or API SM specifications.
However, duri ng the entire time between oi l
change int ervals, never top
off w ith more tha n
a total of 1 qt/lite r engine oil that does not
confo rm t o Audi oil specifi cat ion VW 502 00.
