Safety belts

To provide maximum protection, safety belts
mu st always be posit i oned correctly on the wear-
er's body.

Automatic safety belt retractors
Every safety be lt is equipped with an automatic
belt retractor on the shoulder belt . This feature
locks the belt when the belt is pull ed out fast,
during hard braking and in an accident . T he belt
may also lock when you drive up or down a steep
hill or through a sharp curve. During normal driv-
ing
the belt l ets you move freely.

Safety belt pretensioners
The safety belts on the front seats are equipped
with a belt pretensioner that helps to tighten the
safety belt and remove slack when the preten-
sioner is activated. The function of the preten-
sioner is monitored by a warning light c::> page 15.
Convertible locking retractor
Every safety belt except the one on the driver
seat is equipped with a convertible locking r etrac-
tor that must be used when the safety be lt is
used to attach a child seat . Be sure to read the
important information about this feature

Improperly positioned safety belts can cause

- Safety belts offer optimum protection only
when the seatback is upright and belts are
properly positioned on the body.
- Always
make sure that the rear seat back-
rest to which the center rear safety belt* is
attached is securely latched whenever the
rear center safety belt is being used. If the
backrest is not securely latched, the passen -
ger will move forward with the backrest dur-
ing
sudden braking, in a sudden maneuver
and especia lly in a crash .
- Always
make sure that the rear seat back-

attach the safety belt to the buckle

can
be seriously in jured by the safety belt it-
self when it moves from the stronger parts
of the body into critical areas like the abdo -
men.
