Overview

The BLACK+DECKER Bug Racket Zapper (Catalog Number: BDPC974) is a handheld device designed for eliminating flying and crawling insects. It functions by creating an electric grid that zaps insects upon contact.

Function Description:

The Bug Racket Zapper is primarily used to eliminate various insects such as fruit flies, mosquitoes, house flies, stink bugs, gnats, wasps, and house centipedes. Its design allows for two main methods of insect elimination:

  1. Stationary Zapping: For flying insects, the user can wait for the insect to land on a flat surface, then slowly place the racket grid over the insect. As the insect flies up, it will enter the grid and be zapped.
  2. Active Swatting: For flying insects that are not landing, the user can practice forehand and backhand swings, similar to using a traditional fly swatter, to make contact with the insect.
  3. Crawling Insect Zapping: Crawling insects can be zapped by either pressing the racket onto them or by allowing them to crawl onto the grid and then activating the zap function.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model: BDPC974
  • Grid Voltage: 2,300V
  • Power: 3.0W
  • Battery Requirement: The device requires 2 "AA" batteries (not included).
  • LED Indicator: A red LED light on the front of the racket indicates when the power button is depressed and the unit is switched on. If the LED does not light up, the batteries may need replacement.

Usage Features:

  • On/Off Switch: The device features an orange on/off switch located on the side of the racket zapper (Fig 1 in the manual). Sliding this switch up turns the unit on.
  • Zap Button: An orange zap button is located on the other side of the handle (Fig 2 in the manual). This button must be gently pressed and held down while swatting at a bug to activate the electric grid. Holding the button down when no bugs are present will drain the battery.
  • Battery Installation: To install batteries, the battery cover needs to be removed, batteries inserted as indicated, and the cover replaced.
  • Storage: It is recommended to store the product indoors when not in use, out of reach of children. All packaging material should be saved for storage when the season is over.
  • Battery Preservation: After use, it is suggested to switch the power switch off to preserve battery life.

Maintenance Features:

  • Electric Grid Cleaning: To clean the grid, the user should gently tap the racket on a wastebasket or outside after each use to dislodge any insects stuck in the grid. This process is quick, typically taking about 5 seconds. If remnants of insects remain on the screen, the unit may zap occasionally when powered on.
  • Moisture Handling: If the racket gets wet or is left in a damp environment, it should be allowed to dry for a day or two. A damp metal grid will not function efficiently and will quickly drain the battery.
  • Troubleshooting:
    • If the racket doesn't zap, users should check if the batteries are oriented properly and if they are dead. They can also test the LED light to see if it turns on when the zap button is pressed.
    • For further issues not resolved by troubleshooting, customers are advised to contact customer service rather than returning the product to the store.
  • Servicing: Users are warned not to attempt to adjust or repair the zapper themselves. Component parts should be replaced with like components, and servicing should be performed by factory-authorized service personnel to minimize the risk of possible ignition due to incorrect parts or improper service.
  • Cleaning Restrictions: The product should not be cleaned with a water spray or similar method.

Safety Information:

The manual includes several safety warnings:

  • DANGER: Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury.
  • WARNING: Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury. Also, this product can expose users to certain chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer or birth defects or other reproductive harm (www.P65Warnings.ca.gov). When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and personal injury.
  • CAUTION: Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury.
  • NOTICE: Indicates a practice not related to personal injury which, if not avoided, may result in property damage.
  • Users should not insert foreign objects into the product.
  • The unit should not be placed in an area where it can fall into water or near flammable materials.
  • The device is a tool, not a toy. Users should not touch the middle active net or squeeze the outer mesh screens together as it may cause a shock.
