The device described in this manual is the BMW Motorcycle Radio, model PU-9203A, manufactured by Clarion Co., Ltd. It is a combined FM-MPX/MW/LW radio cassette player with a remote control unit, designed for motorcycles.
Function Description
The PU-9203A serves as an audio entertainment system for motorcycles, offering both radio reception and cassette playback. It integrates an anti-theft system (CATS) for security. The radio supports FM-MPX, MW, and LW bands, with automatic and manual tuning capabilities. The cassette player features auto-reverse and a 4-track, 2-channel stereo system. A remote control unit allows for convenient operation while riding.

Usage Features
CATS (Computer Anti-Theft System):
The radio is rendered inoperative if removed or if power is disconnected. To reactivate, a four-digit electronic lock-out code must be entered. The owner receives an Owner Identification Card with the code. If the code is lost, the BMW dealer can provide assistance.
Radio Cassette Combination Operation:
- Power On/Off and Volume Control: Controlled by the Power Switch (ON) and Volume Control (VOL) knob.
- Tone Controls: Balance Control (BAL), Bass Control (BASS), and Treble Control (TREB) knobs allow adjustment of audio output.
- Cassette Tape Slot: For inserting and ejecting cassettes.
- ST ON Indicator: Illuminates when receiving an FM stereo broadcast.
- LMU Band Switch (BAND): Selects between LW, MW, and FM bands.
- VF Switch: Used for traffic information functions.
- Tuning Mode Switch (TM): Toggles between manual and automatic tuning.
- NL Indicator and CATS Indicator: NL indicates Noise Limiter switch is on; CATS indicates the anti-theft system is active.
- Seek/Manual Tuning Switch: Used for scanning radio frequencies.
- Digital Indicator Display (LCD): Shows frequency, program number, and other operational information.
- Remote Control Unit: Features Seek/Manual Tuning Switch, LED Indicator, Volume Control Switch, and an LCD display.
Tuning and Presets:
- LW/MW/FM Broadcast Reception: The radio can be tuned manually or automatically.
- Tuning Mode Switch (TM): Pressing this switch allows manual tuning in steps of 25kHz for FM, 9kHz for MW, and 1kHz for LW.
- Seek Tuning Switch (Auto DX/Local): Automatically seeks for the next strong signal station. The DX setting searches for weaker signals, while Local searches for stronger signals.
- Preset Switches (1-6): Six preset stations can be stored for each band (LW, MW, FM). To store a station, tune to the desired frequency, then press and hold a preset switch until a beep is heard. To recall, simply press the preset switch.
Cassette Tape Playback:
- Starting Playback: Insert a cassette into the slot.
- Stopping Playback: Press the eject button.
- Automatic Selection: When one side of the tape ends, the other side starts playing automatically.
- Manual Selection: Pressing the program button switches between tape sides.
- FF/REW (with lock): Fast forward or rewind the tape. Pressing the button once starts the function; pressing again stops it.
- Volume Control: Adjusts the playback volume.
- Bass Control: Adjusts bass levels.
- Treble Control: Adjusts treble levels.
- Balance Control: Adjusts the balance between left and right speakers.
- Noise Limiter Switch (NL): Reduces hiss noise during tape playback.
- Program Memory System: If playback is interrupted (e.g., by ejecting the tape or turning off power), it will resume from the same direction when restarted.
Traffic Information (VF Switch):
- The VF switch is used in countries with traffic information stations. When activated, the radio will automatically tune to traffic broadcasts. During cassette playback, the tape will stop, and the traffic information will be broadcast.
- VF Auto Retune: The radio automatically seeks for the strongest traffic information station.
Remote Control Unit:
- Activates the remote control unit by pressing the ON/Volume switch.
- Seek Tuning Switch: Pressing the up or down arrow seeks for the next clear station.
- Volume Control Switch: Pressing the up or down arrow increases or decreases the volume.
Maintenance Features
Handling Cassettes:
- Store cassettes in their plastic cases when not in use.
- Avoid leaving cassettes in the motorcycle, particularly during warm weather.
- Do not stack cassettes.
- Do not play C-120 (or longer) cassettes, as they are thin and prone to breakage.
Fuse Replacement:
- If the fuse blows, replace it with a 7.5A rated fuse.
General Care:
- Damage to Cassette Tapes: Environmental influences are the largest cause of cassette player malfunction. Exercise caution when storing/transporting your cassette tapes in your motorcycle.
- Motorcycle in Motion: Do not change cassettes or channels while the motorcycle is in motion. Always keep both hands on the handlebars while the motorcycle is moving.
Installation:
The manual provides detailed instructions for mounting the main unit and the remote control unit, as well as processing the remote control connection cord. A removal tool (922-1482-00) is used to remove the main unit from its mounting bracket.
Wire Connection:
The manual includes a wiring diagram for connecting the main unit to the UKW/MW/LW antenna, remote control unit, backup power, antenna amplifier, ground, accessory power, and right/left speakers.
