Overview

This document describes the Braun Sommelier KF610 coffee maker, a device designed to brew coffee efficiently and maintain its flavor. The coffee maker is engineered to meet high standards of quality, functionality, and design, aiming to provide a thoroughly enjoyable coffee experience.

Function Description

The Braun Sommelier KF610 is a drip coffee maker that brews coffee by heating water and passing it through ground coffee held in a filter basket. The brewed coffee then drips into a thermal carafe, designed to keep the coffee warm for an extended period. The appliance features a water tank (D) with a water level indicator (C) to show the amount of water. It includes a filter basket (H) that can accommodate either a disposable paper filter (1x4 or No. 4) or a permanent filter (L). The coffee maker is equipped with a drip-stop mechanism to prevent drips when the carafe is removed. An on/off switch (J) controls the brewing process, and an automatic shut-off function turns the appliance off after 15 minutes for safety.

A key feature of the KF610 is its exclusive Braun water filter cartridge (E), specifically designed for Braun coffeemakers. This filter significantly improves coffee flavor by reducing chlorine in the water and helps prevent calcification (scale) buildup within the appliance. The water filter exchange dial (F) serves as a reminder to replace the filter cartridge every two months, indicating the current and replacement months.

The thermal carafe (K) is made of high-quality, double-walled stainless steel, which helps maintain the coffee's temperature after brewing. The carafe's lid is designed to allow coffee to flow in during brewing and can be opened for pouring by rotating a locking knob.

Usage Features

Setting into Operation: Before first use, or as needed, the cord length can be adjusted using the cord storage facility (A) by pulling it out or pushing it in. It's crucial to check that the appliance's voltage matches the socket voltage before plugging it in.

Water Filter Installation:

  1. Remove the water filter cartridge (E) from its packaging and install it according to the instructions.
  2. Take out the space compensator (B) from the water tank.
  3. Insert the water filter cartridge (E) into the water tank. Remember to keep the space compensator, as it must be reinserted when the water filter cartridge is removed.
  4. Set the water filter exchange dial (F) to remind you when to replace the filter. The current month should be on the left (start month), and the replacement month on the right (end month). The water filter should be replaced every two months.

First Use / After Long Periods of Inactivity: Before brewing coffee for the first time, or after a long period of inactivity, or after installing a new water filter cartridge, run the coffeemaker through one brewing cycle using a maximum of 8 cups of cold, fresh water without any ground coffee. This helps clean the system and primes the new filter.

Brewing Coffee:

  1. Fill the water tank (D) with fresh cold water (d) up to the desired level, using the water level indicator (C).
  2. Press the filter basket release button (G) to open the filter basket (H).
  3. Insert a 1x4 or No. 4 paper filter, or use the permanent filter (L), into the filter basket.
  4. Add the desired amount of ground coffee to the filter.
  5. Close the filter basket.
  6. Place the thermal carafe (K) on the carafe stand (I).
  7. Press the on/off switch (J) to start brewing. The brewing process takes approximately one minute per cup.
  8. The drip-stop feature prevents dripping when the carafe is temporarily removed during brewing. Always return the carafe to the stand promptly to prevent overflow.
  9. After brewing, the coffee will flow into the thermal carafe through a special opening in its closed lid.
  10. To pour coffee, press the silver lid grip (c) and tilt the carafe. Always keep the grip pressed while pouring.

Thermal Carafe Pre-warming: For optimal heat retention, pre-warm the thermal carafe with hot water before brewing. This enhances the coffee's warmth and flavor.

Maintenance Features

Cleaning: Always unplug the appliance before cleaning. Never immerse the unit in water or other liquids.

  1. Clean the metal surfaces of the thermal carafe and filter basket with a damp cloth only. Mild detergent can be used. Avoid abrasive cleaners, steel wool pads, alcohol, or benzene.
  2. Wash the thermal carafe and the inside of the filter basket with a soft brush, hot water, and a small amount of dishwashing liquid. Rinse thoroughly with hot water.
  3. All other parts are dishwasher safe.

Descaling: Regular descaling is necessary, especially if you use hard water or do not use the water filter cartridge. If brewing time increases, descaling is required.

  1. Remove the water filter cartridge (E) and replace it with the space compensator (B) during descaling.
  2. Use a commercially available descaling agent suitable for aluminum appliances, or a 4-5% acetic acid solution (white household vinegar).
  3. If using a descaling agent, follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  4. If using vinegar:
    • Fill the water tank with 6 cups of vinegar. Do not mix vinegar with water or other liquids.
    • Turn on the coffeemaker and allow half of the vinegar to flow through.
    • Switch off the appliance and let it stand for 10 minutes.
    • Turn it on again and allow the rest of the vinegar to flow through.
  5. Repeat this process as necessary until brewing time returns to normal.
  6. After descaling, run at least two full cycles with 8 cups of fresh cold water to thoroughly rinse the coffeemaker.

Best Practices for Results:

  • Use only fresh ground coffee.
  • Store ground coffee in a sealed container in a cool, dry, dark place (e.g., a closed shelf or refrigerator).
  • Use only Braun water filters and replace them every two months.
  • Regularly clean and descale the coffeemaker as described in the maintenance sections.

Safety Precautions:

  • Metal surfaces become hot during and after operation. Avoid touching hot surfaces, especially the carafe base, to prevent burns.
  • Always use the handle to carry the carafe and keep it upright.
  • The appliance is suitable for children aged 8 and above, and persons with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, provided they are supervised or instructed on safe use and understand the hazards.
  • Children should not play with the appliance or perform cleaning/maintenance unless supervised and over 8 years old.
  • Keep children under 8 away from the appliance and its cord.
  • If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer or a qualified service agent to avoid hazards.
  • Never immerse the unit in water or other liquids.
  • This appliance is for household use only.
  • Do not use the thermal carafe in a microwave.
  • Only use water for brewing coffee to prevent damage.
  • Do not place the carafe on other heated surfaces.
  • Always use cold water for brewing.
  • Allow the coffee maker to cool for about 5 minutes before refilling the water tank with cold water to prevent steam development.
  • The carafe stand retains residual heat after the appliance is switched off.
  • Do not place the coffee maker in a cabinet while in use.
