Overview

The Breeo SearPlate Griddle is an accessory designed for use with Breeo fire pits, allowing users to cook a variety of foods directly over an open fire. It transforms a standard fire pit into a versatile cooking station, enabling grilling, searing, and other cooking methods.

Function Description:

The SearPlate Griddle is a circular cooking surface that sits atop a Breeo fire pit. It features a central opening that allows flames and smoke to rise, while the surrounding flat surface provides a large area for cooking. The griddle is designed to heat evenly, with different temperature zones across its surface, allowing for simultaneous cooking of various items at different heat levels. For instance, the inner ring closer to the fire will be hotter, ideal for searing meats, while the outer ring will be cooler, suitable for vegetables or keeping food warm. The griddle is equipped with handles for placement and removal, which can be turned downwards during cooking to keep them out of the way.

Important Technical Specifications:

While specific dimensions and material composition are not detailed in the provided manual, the griddle is made of carbon steel, a material known for its excellent heat retention and distribution properties, similar to cast iron. Carbon steel requires seasoning to prevent rust and create a non-stick surface. The griddle is designed to withstand high temperatures generated by an open fire, with recommended cooking temperatures ranging from 450-500°F.

Usage Features:

  • Fire Preparation: Before placing the griddle, a fire should be started using the log cabin method and allowed to burn for at least an hour to build a bed of coals. The flame tips should be below the fire pit rim when the griddle is positioned.
  • Placement: The griddle requires two people for safe placement onto the fire pit. Once positioned, the handles should be turned downwards.
  • Leveling: The griddle can be leveled by nudging the low side up with a glove or spatula, allowing leveling tabs to slide along the fire pit rim until it appears level to the eye.
  • Heating: The griddle should be allowed to heat for 5-10 minutes, or until it reaches 450-500°F. It's recommended to start with a low flame and add logs as more heat is needed to avoid overheating.
  • Heat Test: A "water test" can be performed to check if the griddle is ready for cooking: sprinkling water onto the surface should result in pops and sizzles.
  • Cooking Versatility: The large, flat surface allows for cooking a wide range of foods, from meats like steak and chicken to vegetables like asparagus and carrots, as well as skewers.
  • Removal: Immediately after cooking, the griddle should be removed using two people to raise the handles and lift it off the fire pit. It should be rested on a SearPlate Stand or a noncombustible surface away from traffic to prevent tripping hazards.
  • Safety Precautions: Users are advised to exercise the same precautions as with any open fire, never leaving the griddle unattended, especially around children and pets. The griddle should not be placed on combustible surfaces after removal.

Maintenance Features:

  • Seasoning (Initial): The SearPlate Griddle comes pre-oiled. Initial seasoning involves placing it on a fire pit with a low bed of coals and heating it to 200°F until the oil smokes off. It is then removed and a thin layer of Canola, Grapeseed, or Avocado oil is spread over the warm surface. The griddle is then placed back on the fire and heated to 400-500°F until the oil smokes off and turns an amber color. This process (steps 3 and 4) should be repeated 2-3 times.
  • Seasoning (After Each Use): After each use, the griddle should be oiled with Canola, Grapeseed, or Avocado oil. This helps maintain the seasoned surface and prevents rust.
  • Rust Prevention: Carbon steel can rust if the oil burns off due to prolonged exposure to heat or if not properly maintained. Removing the griddle immediately after cooking and oiling it are crucial steps to prevent rust.

The Breeo SearPlate Griddle is designed for outdoor cooking enthusiasts who own a Breeo fire pit and wish to expand their cooking capabilities beyond traditional grilling, offering a durable and versatile cooking surface for various culinary applications.
