Operation Manual for Hand-held Refractometer
Model RBX4582 / RBX5890
Product Layout
Specification:
Model: RBX4582 RBX5890
Measuring Range: 45 ~ 82% 58 ~ 90 %
Display Resolution: 0.5% 0.2%
Temperature Compensation: Automatic from 10 to 30degree Celsius.
(ATC model code ending with “A”)
Calibration:
1. Calibration should be made in an ambient environment of 20degree Celsius.
2. Open the Light Plate & place a tiny drop of calibration fluid in the center of the
prism.
Model Calibration fluid Calibration Point
RBX4582 78.8% Sucrose Solution 78.8%
RBX5890 78.8% Sucrose Solution 78.8%
3. Use the provided Glass Block and place the frosted side of block on the
center of prism where the fluid is. Ensure the water is spread across the entire
surface of the Glass Block. There must not be any bubbles or dry spots on
the glass block, which is cause by too little liquid use.
4. Wait for about 30 seconds, this is to allow the temperature compensation to
take place.
5. Hold the meter in the direction of light source and look into the Eyepiece.
6. Adjust the Focus Dial until image is clear and sharp. Each person has his
own focusing adjustment.
7. Remove the rubber cap on the Calibration knob, with the use of the provided
trimming tool and adjust it until the bottom line of the darkest blue section is at
the brix scale reads precisely the Calibration Point above. Disregard faint or
white lines
8. Calibration Completed.
9. Rinse the Glass Block and Prism with water and wipe them with soft lint-free
clothes before proceeding with measurement.

Overview

This document describes the operation and maintenance of the RBX4582 and RBX5890 hand-held refractometers.

Function Description

The refractometers are designed for measuring the Brix percentage of solutions. They operate by allowing light to pass through a sample placed on a prism, and the refractive index of the sample is then read on a scale visible through an eyepiece. The device features automatic temperature compensation (ATC) for accurate readings within a range of 10 to 30 degrees Celsius.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Models: RBX4582 and RBX5890
  • Measuring Range:
    • RBX4582: 45% to 82% Brix
    • RBX5890: 58% to 90% Brix
  • Display Resolution:
    • RBX4582: 0.5%
    • RBX5890: 0.2%
  • Temperature Compensation: Automatic from 10 to 30 degrees Celsius (indicated by "A" in the model code for ATC models).
  • Components: Light Plate, Prism, Calibration Knob, Eyepiece, Focus Dial.

Usage Features

Calibration Process:

  1. Environment: Perform calibration in an ambient environment of 20 degrees Celsius.
  2. Sample Application: Open the Light Plate and place a tiny drop of calibration fluid (78.8% Sucrose Solution) in the center of the prism.
  3. Glass Block Placement: Use the provided Glass Block, placing its frosted side on the center of the prism over the fluid. Ensure the fluid spreads across the entire surface of the Glass Block without bubbles or dry spots.
  4. Temperature Compensation Wait: Wait approximately 30 seconds for temperature compensation to take effect.
  5. Viewing: Hold the meter towards a light source and look into the Eyepiece.
  6. Focus Adjustment: Adjust the Focus Dial until the image is clear and sharp.
  7. Calibration Adjustment: Remove the rubber cap from the Calibration Knob. Use the provided trimming tool to adjust the knob until the bottom line of the darkest blue section on the Brix scale precisely aligns with the Calibration Point (78.8%). Disregard any faint or white lines.
  8. Completion: Calibration is complete once the adjustment is made.

Measurement Process:

  1. Sample Application: Open the Light Plate and place 2 to 3 drops of the test liquid on the prism.
  2. Light Plate Closure: Close the Light Plate, ensuring the water spreads across the entire surface of the Prism without bubbles or dry spots.
  3. Temperature Compensation Wait: Wait for about 30 seconds for temperature compensation to take effect.
  4. Viewing: Hold the meter towards a light source and look into the Eyepiece.
  5. Selection: Select the scale intended for measurement.
  6. Reading: Take the reading from the scale where the darkest blue and white area meets. Disregard faint or white lines.

Maintenance Features

Post-Calibration/Measurement Cleaning:

  • Rinse the Glass Block and Prism with water.
  • Wipe them with soft, lint-free clothes before proceeding with the next measurement.

Precautions in Usage:

  • Cleaning: Clean the instrument between each measurement and before storage with a soft cloth. Residue of samples stained on the prism could damage the coating.
  • Chemicals: Do not measure with abrasive or corrosive chemicals. This can damage the prism's coating.
  • Immersion: Do not immerse the instrument in water. If water enters the Eyepiece, contact a qualified service technician.
  • Cleaning the Prism: Do not clean the prism with thinner as this will remove the special coating on the prism and damage the unit.
  • Storage: Do not store the instrument in a damp environment. Store only in a cool and dry environment.
  • Handling: This is an optical instrument and requires careful handling and storage to ensure reliable service for years.
  • Prism and Light Plate Cleaning: After every test, dry the Light Plate and Prism with a soft lint-free cloth.
  • Dust Prevention: It is important to maintain the Light Plate and Prism dust and stain free to ensure good repeatability measurement.
