3. Fit the Pistonphone over the Microphone using the 112" adaptor.
4. Switch on the Pistonphone and wait for the display to stabilize. The display should
indicate 124 dB ± 0,1 dB ( + any ambient pressure correction).
5. If an adjustment is necessary, turn the SENS. ADJ. potentiometer on the side of
the Sound Level Meter with a small screwdriver.
3.4.4. Calibration when the Input Attenuator ZF 0020 is fitted
The
Input Attenuator ZF 0020 gives an attenuation of 20 dB ± 0,2 dB. When the Input
Attenuator is fitted, the Sound Level Meter automatically applies a correction to indi-
cate the appropriate value, and therefore no correction is needed.
When using the internal reference signal, the reference level should be 114 dB + K
0

However, it should be noted that the calibration does not include the Input Attenuator.
For calibration using the Sound Level Calibrator or the Pistonphone, the Sound Level
Meter should indicate 93,8 dB and 124 dB (nominal) respectively, regardless of whether
the Input Attenuator is fitted or not.
3.5. SOUND LEVEL MEASUREMENT
3.5.1. General
It
is good practice, before starting measurements to check the proper function of the
Sound Level Meter and its calibration (see section 3.4). Keep the instrument at arms
length (or mounted on a tripod) to minimize body reflections which can produce errors
of a few dB in the range 300 to 500 Hz. Always use the Windscreen supplied when
measurements are made outdoors or in dusty environments.
3.5.2 Considerations Regarding the Type of Sound Field

The Condenser Microphone fitted to the Type 2230 is designed to have a linear free-
field response for oo incidence. By placing the SOUND INCIDENCE switch to "Random"
a frequency weighting is applied to obtain a linear response under diffuse-field condi-
tions. The use of the SOUND INCIDENCE switch is described in Fig.3.5 and in the
following text. When performing measurements to national or international recommen-
dations, the Sound Level Meter should be used as prescribed by the relevant standard.
