Put a small amount of MgO on the heater or the sample holder. Start a scan for the reflec-
tion (422) at about 126°C. The program DIFFRAC.EVA [2] allows the determination of the
peak position (λ=1.5405Å) and the d-value d
422
and the lattice constant with a
0
=√24*d
422
.
The influence of sample movement on the peak position due to expansion is neglected for
this high angle reflection. Comparing this lattice constant with the literature value (figure
below) gives the temperature. This procedure is well suited to recheck the temperature, if
the temperature dependence was previously investigated by the detailed procedure.
