Adjustment of a Chamber on the D8

4.1.3 Using Automated Height Correction
If your alignment stage is equipped with a motorized Z-translation, the chamber height can
be automatically corrected for e.g. thermal expansion of the sample holder. This requires
a determination of chamber height for a number of temperatures by the procedure de-
scribed in chapter Alternative Procedure Without Alignment Slit [}40]. Once the rotation
error is corrected, e.g. at 25°C, for each temperature only the chamber height has to be
determined under the assumption that the rotation does not change as function of temper-
ature. The fastest method to determine the height is to run a Z-scan in the direct beam
(sufficiently attenuated <10kcps). The correct Z-position is at the half maximum intensity.
You must wait for all parts to warm up before the Z-position can be determined, which
may take several minutes.
Step-by-step procedure:
1. Align the chamber height and rotation under ambient conditions, as described in
chapter Alternative Procedure Without Alignment Slit [}40].
2. Heat up the chamber, wait several minutes and repeat the Height check for motorized
Z-stage.
3. Repeat the Height check at several temperatures relevant to your measurement. Note
temperature and height as in the table below.
4. Transfer these values to the CONFIGURATION plugin in the measurement software
and check the box for Automatic Correction, see figure below.
