The Bushnell Professional Boresighter is an essential tool for quickly adjusting scope or
iron sights to align with the rie or handgun barrel. Correct use of your Boresighter will
put sighting-in test shots on the paper, requiring only minor expenditure of time and
ammunition by test ring to achieve pin-point zero at a given distance. Because of the many
variables involved in both ammunition and the rearm itself, nal “sighting in must be done
by actual ring.

Overview

The Bushnell Professional Boresighter (Model # 743333) is an essential tool designed for quickly adjusting scope or iron sights to align with a rifle or handgun barrel. Its primary function is to enable users to get "on the paper" with their initial sighting-in test shots, thereby minimizing the time and ammunition required to achieve pinpoint zero at a given distance through actual firing. While the boresighter provides a precise initial alignment, final sighting-in must always be accomplished by live firing due to the numerous variables inherent in ammunition and firearms.

The kit includes the boresighter unit itself, along with expandable arbors for various calibers. These unique expandable arbors offer exceptional flexibility, allowing the boresighter to be used with a wide range of firearms, typically from .22 to .45 caliber, with just three arbors. This versatility makes it ideal for owners of multiple firearms.

Technical Specifications and Components:

  • Model Number: 743333
  • Kit Contents (as shown in Fig. 1):
    • Boresighter unit (A)
    • Expandable arbors (B)
    • Carrying case (not explicitly labeled but shown)
  • Arbor Design: The arbors feature an expandable tip mechanism controlled by a locking nut (Fig. 1/2: A). Turning the locking nut counter-clockwise contracts the tips, while turning it clockwise expands them to firmly hold the arbor in the bore.
  • Boresighter Mount: The boresighter unit has a mount designed to securely hold the arbor. The arbor's small end is inserted into this mount with a flat area down, allowing a clamp screw (Fig. 1/2: B) to bear against the flat surface when tightened clockwise.
  • Graduated Grid Reticle: The boresighter features a graduated grid reticle, which is crucial for aligning with the firearm's sights or scope reticle. Each graduation on this grid is equivalent to 4 inches at 100 yards, providing a reference for bullet drop corrections.

Usage Features:

Inserting the Expandable Arbor into the Gun Barrel:

* Place the gun with a mounted scope on a suitable support.
* Select the appropriate arbor and ensure its expandable tips are fully contracted by turning the arbor's locking nut (A) counter-clockwise.
* Insert the small end of the arbor into the boresighter mount with the flat area facing down.
* Tighten the clamp screw (B) clockwise until it is fingertight, securing the arbor to the boresighter.
* With the boresighter in an upright position, carefully insert the arbor into the barrel until the muzzle rests against the tapered section of the arbor (Fig. 2).
* With the arbor locking nut loosened, look through the scope and swing the boresighter to align its vertical grid lines with the scope reticle.
* Turn the arbor locking nut clockwise until the arbor is firmly held in the bore, preventing the boresighter from turning under its own weight.
* To remove the arbor, simply loosen the arbor locking nut (A), push inward to retract the tips, and pull the unit from the barrel.

Bore Sighting a Scope-Mounted Rifle or Handgun:

* Once the boresighter is secured in the barrel, place the firearm on a stable support.
* Remove the adjustment caps from the riflescope.
* Look through the riflescope and align its reticle with the crosshairs of the boresighter's graduated grid reticle using the riflescope's elevation and windage adjustments.
* After alignment, the firearm is ready for initial sighting-in at the range. Proper bore sighting should minimize the time and ammunition needed for final zeroing.

Bore Sighting a Rifle or Handgun with Iron Sights:

* Secure the boresighter to the barrel as described above.
* Place the firearm on a suitable support.
* Viewing through the rear sight, adjust the iron sights to align with the crosshairs on the boresighter's graduated grid reticle.
* Once aligned, the firearm is ready for sighting-in at the range.

Making Corrections for Bullet Drop:

* The graduated grid reticle allows for corrections for bullet drop, provided the trajectory of the specific ammunition load is known.
* Each graduation on the boresighter grid represents 4 inches at 100 yards.
* If the scope reticle is positioned below the grid center, the gun will shoot high. Adjustments can be made using the scope's elevation and windage controls to compensate.

Maintenance Features:

  • Post-Sighting-In Record: After initial "sighting-in" by firing, reinstall the boresighter in the muzzle and note the position of the scope reticle on the boresighter's grid. This record is valuable for later field checks and helps ensure consistent accuracy, especially when using specific ammunition.
  • Field Utility: The boresighter is an invaluable aid for verifying rifle accuracy in the field without needing to fire test shots, which could disturb game.
  • Shop Utility: It is also ideal for checking stock bedding for sensitivity to barrel pressure in a workshop setting.

Optional Accessory Arbors:

Bushnell offers additional accessory arbors to further enhance the versatility of the Professional Boresighter:

  • 15 Arbor Deluxe Kit (Model # 744001): This kit provides gunsmith-quality arbors for total versatility, including calibers: .177, .22, 6mm, .25, 6.5mm, .27, 7mm, .30, .32, .338, .35, .375, .44, .45, and .50.
  • 50 Caliber to 12 Gauge Expandable Arbor (Model # 740012): This accessory is specifically designed for shotgunners or muzzleloader shooters and is compatible with both Professional and Deluxe boresighters.

The Bushnell Professional Boresighter is a robust and practical tool designed to streamline the process of sight alignment, saving time and ammunition for both casual shooters and serious enthusiasts.
