Overview

The Cadence CB5 and CB5R are series of baitcast fishing reels designed to offer superior features, quality, and design for anglers. These reels are suitable for various fishing conditions and are built to provide a smooth and reliable fishing experience.

Function Description

The primary function of the Cadence CB5 and CB5R baitcast reels is to facilitate casting and retrieving fishing lines with precision and control. They are designed to handle monofilament, braid, and fluorocarbon lines, allowing anglers to choose the best line type based on their personal preference and specific fishing conditions. Key components like the handle knob, spool tension knob, star drag, and external brake adjustment dial work together to provide comprehensive control over the reel's operation during casting, retrieval, and fighting fish.

Usage Features

  • Spooling the Line: The reels are designed to be filled with fishing line, with a recommendation to fill to approximately 1/16" (1.5mm) below the top of the reel spool for optimal performance. Guidance for spooling can be found through online video resources, such as those provided by Rapala.
  • Drag Adjustment: The CB5 and CB5R models feature a carbon fiber drag system that ensures smooth and reliable drag tension. The drag is adjusted by turning the star inside the reel handle. Rotating the star clockwise (right) increases drag, while rotating it counterclockwise (left) decreases drag. A general rule of thumb is to set the drag to approximately one-third of the breaking test of the line being used. This can be precisely achieved by tying the line to a spring scale.
  • Spool Tension Knob: This knob controls the speed at which the spool spins during casting. It is located on the side plate of the reel, near the handle. To adjust, anglers should properly assemble the rod, reel, line, and lure. With the thumb on the line to hold the spool, the thumb bar is depressed to disengage the gears. If the lure does not fall, the spool tension knob should be turned counterclockwise (left) to reduce tension. If the lure falls and the spool continues to rotate excessively, the tension is too loose, and the knob should be rotated clockwise (right) to increase tension. For beginners, it is recommended to tighten the spool tension knob an extra ¼ to ½ a turn and gradually back it off as casting skills improve, to help prevent backlashes.
  • Magnetic Braking System: Cadence baitcast reels are equipped with highly tunable magnetic braking systems for superior casting control. This system helps to maximize casting distance and minimize overrun. The brake adjustment dial allows for fine-tuning of spool tension. Turning the dial towards the "MAX" setting moves the magnetic braking system closer to the spool, increasing braking force and slowing the spool's rotation. This adjustment should be matched to the lure's weight and the angler's preference.
  • Sideplate Removal: The reels feature a removable palm side plate, which provides access to the spool and brake system. To open the side plate, the side plate release button is pushed downward until it disengages.
  • Basic Casting Technique:
    1. Depress the thumb bar while keeping the thumb tip on the spool to control the lure. The rod and reel should be held with the handle pointing upward.
    2. Hold the rod and reel in front of the body, then bring the rod backward until the tip is above and behind the shoulder. Cast by bringing the rod back in front of the body in a single, continuous motion.

Maintenance Features

  • Regular Rinsing: After each use, especially if used in salt or brackish water, the Cadence reel should be gently rinsed with fresh water and wiped dry. This helps prevent corrosion and extends the reel's lifespan.
  • Periodic Lubrication: The reel requires periodic lubrication. For frequent use or harsh conditions, lubrication may be needed more than once a year. At a minimum, it should be lubricated annually. Users should refer to a grease guide to determine the correct application points for lubricant. High-quality oil and grease, such as Reel Saver, are recommended for this purpose.
