Overview

This document describes the DF-320TM and MS-310TM calculators, focusing on their general operation, power supply, and maintenance.

General Guide

The calculators feature a 3-line display, which is a key usability feature. This display allows users to view intermediate results alongside the final calculated result, enhancing clarity and making complex calculations easier to follow. For instance, when calculating cost, margin, and selling price, all three values can be displayed simultaneously.

Rounding Selector (F CUT UP 5/4)

The rounding selector allows users to specify the rounding system for their calculations.

  • F (Floating decimal point system): This setting displays the value without any rounding, showing the full precision of the calculation.
  • CUT (Cuts off the decimal): When this is selected, the calculator truncates the decimal at a specified number of places. This means any digits beyond the chosen decimal place are simply removed, not rounded up or down.
  • UP (Rounds up the decimal): This option rounds up the decimal to the specified number of places. If there are any non-zero digits beyond the specified decimal place, the last displayed digit will be rounded up.
  • 5/4 (Rounds off the decimal): This is the standard rounding method, where the decimal is rounded off to the specified number of places. If the digit immediately following the last specified decimal place is 5 or greater, the last specified digit is rounded up; otherwise, it remains the same. The number of decimal places for CUT, UP, and 5/4 settings is determined by the Decimal Place Selector.

Decimal Place Selector (4 3 2 1 0 ADD2)

This selector specifies the number of decimal places for rounding. It is active when the Rounding Selector is set to any position other than F.

  • 4, 3, 2, 1, 0: These numbers indicate the exact number of decimal places to be used for rounding (CUT, UP, or 5/4).
  • ADD2 (Add Mode): This unique mode automatically adds a decimal point and two decimal places to all values, even if the user doesn't input a decimal point. This feature is particularly useful for calculations involving currencies like dollars, which typically require two decimal places. However, it's important to note that two decimal places are not added if the key is pressed while inputting a value, or for any operation other than addition and subtraction. This provides flexibility for users who need to override the automatic two-decimal-place setting for specific inputs or operations.

Display Indicators

The calculator's display includes several indicators to provide information about the current state or type of value being displayed:

  • ' (3-digit separator): An apostrophe is used as a separator for every three digits, making large numbers easier to read.
  • COST: Indicates a cost amount.
  • SELL: Indicates a sell amount.
  • MAR: Indicates a margin value.
  • TAX: Indicates a tax amount.
  • T+ (TAX+): Indicates a price-plus-tax value (DF-320TM) or a price-plus-tax value (MS-310TM).
  • T- (TAX-): Indicates a price-less-tax value (DF-320TM) or a price-less-tax value (MS-310TM).
  • PRICE: Indicates a price value (DF-320TM).
  • PAYMENT: Indicates a payment value (DF-320TM).
  • RATE: Indicates a currency rate value (DF-320TM).
  • -: Indicates a negative value.
  • GT: Indicates the grand total memory.
  • M: Indicates the independent memory.
  • E: Indicates an error.
  • K: Indicates a constant calculation.
  • SET: Indicates set mode.

Correcting Input Errors

The calculators offer several ways to correct input errors, ensuring accuracy and ease of use.

  • Clearing the last input: To completely clear a value that has just been entered, press the C key.
  • Shifting digits: For the DF-320TM model, if you need to re-input from a specific digit within a displayed value, you can press the key to shift the displayed value digit-by-digit to the right until you reach the desired digit.
  • Correcting time calculation inputs: If you input incorrect minutes or seconds during a time calculation but haven't yet pressed HMS, you can simply input the correct values to overwrite the error. If you input a wrong time calculation value and then press HMS, you can press C to completely clear the time input and restart the calculation from the beginning.
  • Correcting arithmetic operation keys: If you press the wrong arithmetic operation key (e.g., +, -, ×, ÷), you can simply press the correct key before inputting anything else. This allows for quick correction without having to clear the entire calculation.

Clearing Calculations

  • Clearing calculator (except independent memory): To clear all calculations except the contents of the independent memory, press the AC key.
  • Clearing independent memory: To clear only the independent memory, press the MRC key twice.

Error Indicator

If the error indicator "E" appears on the display, it signifies an error. To clear the error and continue with the current calculation, press C. To clear the entire calculation, including any stored values, press AC.

Power Supply

The calculators utilize a Two Way Power System, combining a solar cell with an LR44 button-type battery. This hybrid power system offers significant advantages over calculators that rely solely on solar power.

  • Flexible operation: Unlike solar-only calculators, these models can be used under virtually any lighting conditions, as long as there is sufficient light to read the display. This ensures consistent performance whether you're in a brightly lit office or a dimly lit room.
  • Automatic Power Off Function: The calculators do not have a manual OFF switch. Instead, they are equipped with an automatic power-off function that activates approximately six minutes after the last key operation. This helps conserve battery life. To restore power, simply press the AC key. It's important to note that even when the Auto Power Off function operates, the contents of the independent memory are not cleared, preserving your work.

Battery Replacement

  • Professional replacement: Users are advised not to attempt to replace the battery themselves. Instead, battery replacement should be handled by an authorized CASIO dealer or service center. This ensures proper installation and prevents potential damage to the device.
  • Indications for replacement: If the display becomes dim and difficult to read, or if nothing appears on the display when the AC key is pressed (especially in dim lighting), it indicates that the battery likely needs to be replaced.
  • Preventing damage: A dead battery can leak over time, potentially damaging the calculator if left in the battery compartment for extended periods. Therefore, it's crucial to replace a dead battery promptly to prevent internal corrosion and maintain the calculator's functionality.

Important Precautions

To ensure the longevity and proper functioning of the calculator, several precautions should be observed:

  • Avoid impact: Do not drop the calculator or subject it to severe impact. Physical shocks can damage internal components or the display.
  • No disassembly: Never attempt to take the calculator apart. Disassembly can void the warranty, damage delicate electronics, and expose users to potential hazards.
  • Cleaning: To clean the unit, use a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals, abrasive materials, or excessive moisture, as these can damage the casing or electronic components.
  • Manual updates: The contents of these instructions are subject to change without notice. Users should be aware that specifications or operational details might be updated by the manufacturer.
  • Manufacturer responsibility: CASIO COMPUTER CO., LTD. assumes no responsibility for any loss or claims by third parties that may arise from the use of this product. This typically refers to indirect damages or liabilities not directly related to product defects.

General Usage Tip:

It is highly recommended to keep the manual and all related information handy for future reference. This ensures that users can quickly consult instructions for specific functions or troubleshooting whenever needed. Unless otherwise specified, all examples provided in these instructions refer to the DF-320TM model.
