Overview

The CM Series 637 Lever Operated Chain Hoist is a manually operated lifting device designed for various industrial applications. It is built in accordance with the specifications contained within the manual and complies with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Code B30.21 "Manually Operated Lever Hoists." This hoist is intended for lifting, supporting, and transporting loads, with a strong emphasis on safe operation and regular maintenance.

Function Description

The hoist operates by means of a lever, allowing for manual lifting or tensioning of loads. It features a "free chaining" mode that enables quick adjustment of the load chain by hand when no load is attached. In this mode, the directional lever is set to neutral ("N"), and the free chaining knob is pulled out and rotated counterclockwise, disengaging the internal gearing. Once the chain is adjusted, the free chaining feature is disengaged by moving the directional lever to the "load" position and rotating the knob clockwise until it engages the cam guide. The lever is then operated up and down to lift or tension the load. To lower or loosen the load, the directional lever is shifted to "unload" and the lever is operated up and down. The hoist is designed to pull in a straight line from hook to hook, and the frame must be free to swivel on the upper hook to prevent damage and ensure proper operation.

Important Technical Specifications

The CM Series 637 Lever Operated Chain Hoist is available in several rated load capacities:

  • 3/4 ton (750 kg)
  • 1-1/2 tons (1500 kg)
  • 3 tons (3000 kg)
  • 6 tons (6000 kg)

The lever pulls required to achieve rated capacity are:

  • 35 pounds (15.9 kg) for the 3/4 ton unit
  • 40 pounds (18.1 kg) for the 1-1/2 ton unit
  • 73 pounds (33.1 kg) for the 3 ton unit
  • 77 pounds (34.9 kg) for the 6 ton unit

The hoist is designed for operation at nominal ambient temperatures ranging from 0°F to 100°F (-18°C to 38°C). The load chain is specifically Hoistaloy load chain, which is specially heat-treated and hardened, and should never be repaired or replaced with commercial or other manufacturer's parts. The manual provides specific dimensions for chain stock diameter and maximum allowable used chain length for each capacity, as well as hook throat opening limits for replacement.

Usage Features

The hoist incorporates several features to ensure safe and efficient use:

  • Free Chaining Knob: Allows for rapid adjustment of the load chain when the hoist is unloaded, facilitating quick attachment to the load.
  • Directional Lever: Provides clear control for "load" (lifting/tensioning), "unload" (lowering/loosening), and "neutral" (free chaining) operations.
  • Hook Latches: Designed to prevent accidental detachment of the load under slack chain conditions.
  • Straight Line Rigging: Emphasizes the importance of rigging the unit in a straight line from hook to hook, with the frame free to swivel, to prevent damage and ensure proper load application.
  • Load Chain Guide Roller: Ensures the load chain feeds properly into the liftwheel, preventing twisting and jamming.

The manual stresses several "Do's and Don'ts" for safe operation, including:

  • Always using hook latches.
  • Never exceeding the rated load.
  • Avoiding the use of extensions on the lever.
  • Not operating a damaged or malfunctioning hoist.
  • Ensuring the load chain is properly seated and free of twists, kinks, or damage.
  • Keeping all persons clear of suspended loads.
  • Never using the hoist to lift, support, or transport people.
  • Not leaving an applied load unattended without specific precautions.

Maintenance Features

The manual outlines a comprehensive maintenance program, divided into frequent and periodic inspections, to ensure continuous and satisfactory operation.

Frequent Inspections (Daily or Before Each Use):

  • Visual examination of the hoist for operational warning notices and legibility.
  • Checking the braking mechanism for evidence of slippage.
  • Verifying free movement of the directional lever.
  • Inspecting the load chain for lubricant, wear, damaged links, or foreign material.
  • Checking hooks for damage, cracks, twists, latch engagement, and proper latch operation.

Periodic Inspections (by a designated person making records):

  • Every Three Months:
    • Chain for excessive wear or stretch (using gage length measurements).
    • Worn, cracked, or distorted parts such as hook blocks, hook pins, chain guide rollers, strippers, side plates, gear covers, gears, bushings, levers, brake covers, free chaining knobs, ratchet hub pawls, cam guides, friction hubs, and lever ratchet hubs.
    • Wear on the tip of the pawls, teeth of the ratchet, and pockets of the liftwheel.
  • Every Three Months: Loose or missing bolts, nuts, pins, or rivets.
    • Brake components for worn, glazed, or contaminated friction discs and scoring of the friction hub and ratchet. Friction washers should be replaced if contaminated, glazed, or if thickness is less than 0.059 inches (1.5 mm).
    • Corroded, stretched, or broken pawl springs, ratchet hub pawl springs, and pinion springs.
  • At Least Once a Year (or if external conditions indicate unusual usage):
    • Hooks should be inspected for cracks using dye penetrant, magnetic particle, or other suitable crack detecting methods.
    • Capacity/Warning label for legibility and retention.
    • Load chain end ring in place and properly secured.

Lubrication:

  • The load chain should be lubricated liberally with Lubriplate® Bar and Chain Oil 10-R (Fiske Bros. Refining Co.) or an equal lubricant, ensuring it reaches the bearing surfaces between the links. Excess lubricant should be wiped off. Used motor oils are explicitly prohibited as chain lubricant due to carcinogenic materials.
  • When the hoist is disassembled for cleaning or repairs, specific parts (gears, bearing balls of upper and lower hooks, upper hook pin, rollers of the liftwheel bearing, inside of chain guide roller, exterior of pinion shaft, surface of ratchet hub pawl, surfaces of frame bushings, surface of cam guide, and gear cover bushings) should be lubricated with Molykote BR-2-S (Dow Corning), Molytex #2 (Texaco), Topmoly (Topsall) grease or an equal lubricant. Old grease must be thoroughly cleaned from these parts before re-lubrication.
  • The brake is designed to operate dry, and no grease or lubricant should be applied to the braking surfaces to prevent slippage and loss of load control.

Testing:

  • Prior to initial use, after alterations or repairs, or if not operated for 12 months, the hoist must be tested.
  • First, test in the unloaded state, then with a light load (100 pounds/45 kg times the number of load-supporting parts of load chain) to ensure proper operation and brake holding.
  • Finally, test with a load of 125% of rated capacity.
  • For hoists with replaced load-sustaining parts, testing must be performed by or under the direction of a designated person, and a written report prepared for record purposes.

The manual also includes detailed instructions for disassembly and assembly, including specific considerations for bearing balls, latch assembly, gear timing, and reeving the load chain for different hoist capacities. It emphasizes the use of CM-supplied replacement parts to avoid load loss and ensure the hoist's specific material and processing properties are maintained.
