Overview

The document provided is an Operating, Maintenance & Parts Manual for the Coffing LSB-B Series Ratchet Lever Hoist. This manual covers models with capacities ranging from 3/4 to 6 tons, specifically LSB1500B, LSB3000B, LSB6000B, and LSB12000B.

Function Description:

The Coffing LSB-B Series Ratchet Lever Hoist is a manually operated device designed for lifting, pulling, and positioning loads. It utilizes a lever and a chain mechanism to multiply force, allowing a single operator to move heavy objects. The hoist is built for heavy-duty materials handling operations and is manufactured to comply with ASME B30.21 and ANSI/ASME HST-3M standards. It is intended for industrial use where precise control over load movement is required.

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual provides a "Hoist Specifications" table (Table 1) detailing key parameters for different capacities:

  • Rated Capacity: Available in 0.75, 1.5, 3, and 6 tons.
  • Standard Lift: All models come with a standard lift of 5 feet.
  • Chain Diameter x Falls:
    • 0.75 ton: Ø5.6mm x 1 fall
    • 1.5 ton: Ø7.1mm x 1 fall
    • 3 ton: Ø9mm x 1 fall
    • 6 ton: Ø9mm x 2 falls
  • Minimum Distance Between Hooks:
    • 0.75 ton: 11 7/16 inches
    • 1.5 ton: 13 inches
    • 3 ton: 16 15/16 inches
    • 6 ton: 22 3/4 inches
  • Pull on Lever to Lift Full Load:
    • 0.75 ton: 46 lbs
    • 1.5 ton: 59 lbs
    • 3 ton: 75 lbs
    • 6 ton: 76 lbs
  • Length of Operating Handle: 9 1/4 inches for 0.75 ton, 14 9/16 inches for 1.5, 3, and 6 ton models.
  • Net Weight:
    • 0.75 ton: 12 lbs
    • 1.5 ton: 21 lbs
    • 3 ton: 35 lbs
    • 6 ton: 67 lbs
  • Test Load: 1.125 tons for 0.75 ton, 2.25 tons for 1.5 ton, 4.5 tons for 3 ton, and 9.0 tons for 6 ton models. This indicates a 125% test load capacity.

The manual also includes specifications for hook dimensions, with "Standard Size" and "Limit" (maximum permissible dimensions) for the hook opening ("C" Dimension). For example, a 0.75-ton hoist has a standard hook opening of 1 3/16 inches and a limit of 1 5/16 inches.

Usage Features:

The hoist features a selector lever with "UP," "DOWN," and "N" (neutral/free-chaining) positions.

  • Hoisting (Pulling): Set the selector lever to "UP," take up slack with the guide handle, and manipulate the operating handle clockwise.
  • Lowering (Releasing): Set the selector lever to "DOWN" and manipulate the operating handle counterclockwise.
  • Free-Chaining: Set the selector lever to "N" to quickly adjust load chain length without a load. This feature is not possible when the hoist is under a load, the guide handle is obstructed, or the brake is locked.
  • Resetting: The hoist automatically transitions from free-chaining to brake-locked when a load is applied. The brake can be locked by turning the guide handle clockwise or pulling firmly on the stop grip.

Safety is paramount, with numerous warnings and precautions:

  • Rated Load: Never exceed the hoist's rated load.
  • Brake Test: Always test the brake system by lifting and lowering the load about 4 inches before full operation.
  • Load Handling: Lift loads slowly, avoid swinging, and prevent abrupt shocks.
  • Hooking: Loads must be applied squarely to the center of the hook, and hook latches must be closed. Improper hooking methods (e.g., applying load to the tip of the hook, using the hook directly on a load) are prohibited.
  • Load Chain: Protect the load chain from damage, weld splatter, and twisting. Do not use the load chain as a sling.
  • Operating Environment: Avoid extreme temperatures (above 200°F).
  • Personnel Safety: Never lift or transport people, and ensure all personnel remain clear of supported loads.
  • Modifications: Do not modify the hoist without manufacturer approval.
  • Lever Extension: Never use a "cheater bar" or any lever extension.
  • Overload Protection (Optional): The hoist can be equipped with an overload protection device (Reference No. 80) that slips if the load exceeds the rated capacity. This device may require adjustment, with specific torque ranges provided for different models (e.g., 28-32 foot-lbs for LSB1500B).

Maintenance Features:

The manual emphasizes a periodic inspection program to ensure longevity and safe operation.

  • Storage: Store the hoist in a dry, airy area, never in damp environments.
  • Lubrication: Proper lubrication is crucial. The "Recommended Lubrication Schedule" (Figure 14) specifies:
    • Load Chain: SAE 20-30 machine oil (Daily for heavy service, Weekly for normal, Monthly for infrequent).
    • Load Pawl Shaft, Pinion Shaft, Gear & Bearings, Pinion & Gear Teeth: Multi-purpose Lithium base bearing grease (At periodic inspection).
    • Bottom Block Shaft, Bearing & Hook Swivel: SAE 20-30 machine oil (Monthly for heavy service, Yearly for normal/infrequent).
    • CAUTION: Do not lubricate the brake area of the hoist.
  • Inspection: A detailed "Inspection and Maintenance Check List" (Figure 13A) covers various components:
    • Load Chain: Check for inadequate lubrication, wear, stretch, cracks, twists, corrosion, or foreign substances.
    • Hooks: Inspect for excessive throat opening, bends, twists, damage to latches, wear, chemical damage, or cracks.
    • Pawls, Springs, Retaining Rings, Pawl Stud: Check for wear, cracks, binding, breaks, corrosion, or looseness.
    • Sheave, Pinion Shaft, Chain Attachments, Gearing, Bearings, Shafts: Look for inadequate lubrication, distortion, cracks, excessive wear, or broken teeth.
    • Housing, Load Block, Outrigger, Hook Swivels: Inspect for cracks, distortion, loose bolts, nuts, or rivets.
    • Nuts, Bolts, Rivets: Check for looseness, stripped, or damaged threads.
    • Supporting Structure: Ensure no damage or wear restricts its ability to support loads.
    • Capacity Plate & Decals: Verify they are not missing, damaged, or illegible.
  • Replacement Parts: The manual includes exploded diagrams and parts lists for .75 & 1.5 Ton Models (Figure 15) and 3 & 6 Ton Models (Figure 16), with corresponding reference numbers, descriptions, and part numbers for both capacities. When ordering, model, capacity, product number, and quantity should be provided.
  • Troubleshooting: A "Trouble Shooting" section helps diagnose common issues like slip caused by ineffective braking, load dropping while lowering, jammed operating handle, noises during operation, and difficult-to-operate handles, providing probable causes and remedies.
