Overview

This document describes the Weight Watchers by Conair bathroom scale, specifically models #WW78, which functions as a body analysis monitor. The scale is designed to help users track their weight and various body composition metrics, providing a comprehensive tool for managing health and fitness.

Function Description

The primary function of this device is to measure body weight. Beyond simple weight measurement, it incorporates bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to estimate several body composition metrics:

  • Body Fat Percentage and Pounds: The scale sends a safe, very low electrical current through the lower half of the body. Since electrical current flows more quickly through water and muscle than through bone and fat, the scale measures the speed of the current to estimate body fat using a multi-step mathematical formula. It displays both the percentage of body fat and the actual number of pounds of body fat.
  • Body Mass Index (BMI): The scale calculates BMI, a statistical term derived from height and weight, which is linked to body fat and health outcomes. It provides a BMI score alongside weight and body fat measurements.
  • Body Water/Hydration Levels: Using BIA, the scale also calculates the percentage of body water, taking into consideration the user's age and gender. This helps users monitor their hydration status.
  • Bone Mass: The device estimates bone mass as a percentage of total body weight. While most people don't need to monitor bone mass regularly, it can be useful for certain groups, such as post-menopausal women, individuals with certain diseases, or those taking medications that affect bone tissue.

The scale can be used in a "weight only" mode without programming user data, functioning as a basic weigh scale. When customized, it stores data for up to four users, allowing individuals to track their personal progress over time.

Usage Features

The scale offers both a simple weight-only mode and a customizable body analysis mode.

Weight Only Mode:

  1. To turn on the scale, tap it with your foot. The display will light up.
  2. Wait for all digits to light up for several seconds until "0.0" appears.
  3. Step onto the scale and stand still to measure your weight.
  4. The weight reading will stay lit for a few seconds before the scale automatically shuts off.

Customizing Your Body Analysis Monitor (for up to 4 users):

  1. Set User Data: Tap the scale to turn it on and wait for "0.0" to appear.
  2. Set User Number: Press the "Set" button. "P-01" will blink. Use the Up/Down arrows to select a user number (P-01 to P-04) and press "SET" to confirm.
  3. Set Height: The inch or cm symbol will light up (default is inches if the switch is set to lb, or cm if set to KG). Use the Up/Down arrows to adjust the height. Holding an arrow will advance numbers quickly. Press "SET" to accept the height.
  4. Set Age: "AGE" appears, and the default age (25) flashes. Use the Up/Down arrows to adjust the age and press "SET" to confirm.
  5. Set Gender: A gender icon flashes. Use the Up/Down arrows to choose between male and female gender.
  6. Display and Store Data: Once gender is set, data storage is complete. The scale will display the stored user number, height, and age for a few seconds before turning off automatically. It is then ready for use.

Body Analysis Measurement:

  1. Operate the scale on a secure, flat floor. Tap the scale to turn it on, and wait for "0.0" to appear.
  2. Press the "User" button repeatedly until your user number shows on the display.
  3. The stored data for your user number (user number, height, and age) will appear, followed by "0.0".
  4. Step onto the scale barefoot, ensuring your feet are aligned on the electrodes (metal strips) on both sides of the platform. Barefoot contact is essential for body analysis measurements.
  5. Your current weight will be displayed for a few seconds.
  6. The display will then show your body fat percentage.
  7. Next, the display shows your body water percentage.
  8. Then, the display shows your bone mass value.
  9. Finally, the display shows your Body Mass Index (BMI) score.
  10. The display turns off automatically.

Important Usage Notes:

  • The scale should be placed on a level surface for accurate operation and safety.
  • Do not step on the scale before "0.0" appears, as it will not function properly.
  • If "Err" appears in body analysis mode, it indicates improper foot contact, possibly due to socks, shoes, or hard/dry skin. Applying a small amount of moisturizer to your feet before use can help ensure proper contact with the electrodes.
  • For consistent and accurate readings, it is recommended to weigh yourself once a week, on the same day, at the same time, in the same place, wearing the same clothes, and using the same scale.
  • Track trends over time rather than focusing on daily fluctuations, as body composition measurements can vary considerably day to day due to factors like hydration status, skin temperature, and weight loss.
  • The scale is not recommended for persons with electrical implants (e.g., pacemakers) or pregnant women. Consult a physician for questions regarding product use with any medical conditions or treatments.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning: The scale is an electronic instrument and should never be submerged in water. Clean it with a damp cloth and/or glass cleaner.
  • Battery Replacement: If the display shows "Lo," indicating low battery, open the battery cover on the bottom of the scale. Replace the old batteries with two new 3V lithium batteries. Dispose of old batteries properly.
  • Handling: Electronic sensors are sensitive. Avoid dropping or jarring the scale. Place it gently on the floor and store it where it will be protected from impact.
  • Servicing: Do not attempt to open the scale or remove any components. Servicing should be done by qualified technicians only. Refer to the warranty information for service details.
  • Error Messages: An "ERR" message may appear if the scale's capacity is exceeded or if there is improper foot contact during body analysis.
