Why does my Cooper & Hunter GRS-C3.5/A1-K Heat Pump wired controller show L6 and the water temperature?

The wired controller displaying L6 and the water temperature alternately indicates that the ambient temperature is outside the operational range of the main unit, preventing it from starting. In this situation, the auxiliary electric heater will run independently, which is normal.
