DSG automatic transmission
torque converter found on conventional auto-
matic gearboxes and allow for smooth, unin-
terrupted acceleration of the vehicle.
The Tiptronic system allows the driver to
change gears manually ›››page178, Chang-
ing gear in Tiptronic mode.
Gear selector positions
Fig.118 On the centre console: selector
lever.
The gear selector position is shown by the
corresponding sign lighting up. The engaged
gear is also displayed on the screen in manual
shift positions M, D, S and E (when the Eco
›››page184 engine setting is selected in the
Individual prole).
- Parking lock
When the P button is pressed, the drive wheels
are locked. Only press P when the vehicle is
stationary ››› .
To press the P button you must press the brake
pedal simultaneously.
– Reverse gear
Reverse gear must be engaged only when the
vehicle is stationary and the engine is idling
›››
.
To engage reverse gear R, you must press the
brake pedal simultaneously. The reverse lights
switch on when the reverse gear R is selected
and the ignition is on.
– Neutral
In this position, the gear is in neutral.
Press the brake pedal to move the lever from
N to D/S when the vehicle is stationary or at
speeds below 3km/h (2mph) ››› .
– Permanent forward drive position
The D/S position enables the gears to be op-
erated in normal mode (D) or sport mode (S).
To select Sport mode S, move the lever back-
wards. Pushing the lever again will select nor-
mal mode D. The selected driving mode is dis-
played on the instrument panel screen.
In normal mode (D), the gearbox selects the
best gear ratio. This depends on the engine
load, speed and the dynamic regulation pro-
gram (DRP).
Sport mode(S) should be selected for a sporty
driving style. This setting makes use of the en-
gine's maximum power output. When acceler-
ating, gear shifting operations are perceptible.
Under certain circumstances (e.g. on moun-
tain roads) it can be advantageous to switch
tiptronic mode ›››page178, to adapt the
gears to suit the road conditions.
WARNING
●
Take care not to press the accelerator
pedal when the vehicle is stopped. The vehi-
cle could start moving immediately (in some
cases even if the parking brake is engaged)
resulting in the risk of an accident.
●
Never move the lever to position R when
driving. Failure to follow this instruction
could result in an accident or failure.
●
With lever in any position, the foot brake
must be depressed whenever the engine is
running. This is because an automatic gear-
box still transmits power even at idling speed.
●
Do not accelerate while selecting a gear,
with the car stationary and the engine run-
ning. Failure to follow this instruction could
result in an accident.
