DANA Pump Battery

Overview

The DANA Diabecare RS Insulin Pump is a medical device designed for the continuous subcutaneous delivery of insulin. This quick reference guide provides an easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide to the most common and frequently used features of the pump. It is supplementary to the Instruction For Use (IFU), and users are advised to read the entire IFU, including all precautions and warnings, before commencing or using the pump. For advanced features and more complex operations, users should refer to the DANA RS IFU.

Function Description:

The DANA Diabecare RS Insulin Pump delivers insulin to the user, allowing for precise management of blood glucose levels. It supports various insulin delivery modes, including basal rates, quick boluses, and boluses with correction factors. The pump features a user-friendly interface with a keypad for navigation and an LCD screen for displaying information and menus. It also incorporates a bolus calculator to assist in determining appropriate insulin doses based on blood glucose levels and carbohydrate intake.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Insulin Reservoir: The pump uses a 3ml DANA Reservoir.
  • Battery: The pump operates on a DANA lithium battery.
  • Insulin Delivery: Basal rates are displayed in units per hour (u/h).
  • Display: The LCD screen shows date, time, current basal rate, percentage of basal rate, and units remaining in the pump reservoir.
  • Glucose Units: The pump can display Blood Glucose in either mmol/L or mg/dl, depending on the region and user settings.
  • Cannula Volume: The preset volume for filling the cannula can be set up to a maximum of 1.0 unit.

Usage Features:

Inserting a Battery and Turning the Pump On:

  • Use the supplied DANA battery key to open the battery compartment by turning it counter-clockwise.
  • Install a new DANA lithium battery with terminals facing down.
  • Place the battery cap back onto the pump and tighten it firmly using the battery key until it is firm and flush with the top of the pump.
  • The pump automatically turns on and performs self-checks.
  • Maintenance Tip: When changing the battery, clean the inside thread of the pump and the O-ring.
  • Battery Advice: New DANA lithium batteries have a passivation film that prevents energy loss during storage. When first loading a new battery, the pump draws a high current to break this film. If the battery does not display 100% after the first bolus, remove and reinsert it 2-3 times to ensure the passivation film is fully broken, which will help the battery last as expected. Wiping a new battery clean with an alcohol swab is also recommended due to manufacturing processes.

Pump Main Keypad - Navigating the Pump:

The pump's UI is new and improved, working in a circular rotation through menus.

  • (+) Button: Increases insulin dosages, time, and date.
  • (-) Button: Decreases insulin dosages, time, and date, or exits to the previous menu (cancel/stop button).
  • Right Arrow Button: Moves to the next function on the LCD screen or scrolls to the right in menus.
  • OK Button: Selects the highlighted function on the LCD screen, confirms settings, or starts a bolus.

Pump Initial Screen:

The home screen displays:

  • Date (1)
  • Time (2)
  • Current Basal Rate (3): In units per hour, with a flashing 'B' indicating active basal delivery.
  • Percentage of Basal Rate (4): 100% indicates normal basal delivery without a temporary rate.
  • Battery Indicator (5)
  • Units Remaining in Pump Reservoir (6)

Loading an Insulin Reservoir:

  • Preparation: Gather Analog Insulin (room temperature), DANA Reservoir (3ml), DANA Easy Setter, Linking Screw, DANA Infusion Set and Alcohol Swab (if required), and DANA Insulin Pump.
  • Procedure:
    1. Remove and discard the round cap at the bottom (back) of the reservoir.
    2. Remove the thin white plastic cap from within the reservoir and set it aside.
    3. Hold the reservoir plunger barrel firmly and attach the linking screw, ensuring alignment and engagement.
    4. Push the linking screw (and barrel) to the top to prepare for filling, ensuring the double O-ring moves freely to prevent occlusion.
    5. Remove the needle protective cap and insert it into the 3ml vial of room temperature insulin.
    6. Use the needle protective cap to push the insulin plunger down, slowly pushing insulin into the DANA 3ml reservoir. Draw out the last bit by pulling on the linking screw and barrel.
    7. Place the clear needle protective cover back onto the needle. Gently tap the reservoir to make air bubbles rise, then gently push the plunger up to remove them.
    8. Twist and pull to remove the needle from the reservoir, then use the small white plastic stopper to seal the top.
    9. Insert the reservoir into the Easy Setter (it will protrude from the top).
    10. Press the button on the Easy Setter for 3 seconds to wind down the reservoir. Retrieve the adjusted reservoir.
    11. Remove the reservoir from the Easy Setter gently, without moving the plunger or adjusting the linking screw.
    12. Insert the reservoir into the pump and screw the reservoir cap down tightly.
    13. Input the insulin volume via the refill sub-menu, then select the prime option from the refill menu. Attach the new Infusion set tube to the pump and start priming.
    14. Stop or suspend priming when the tube is full of insulin and no air bubbles are visible (5cm of insulin tube = 1 unit insulin). Use the (-) key to pause.
    15. If using a Teflon (plastic) cannula, select the prime cannula menu to fill the empty needle after insertion and tube connection.
  • Important Note: Priming the new infusion set tube is crucial to displace air with insulin. Failure to do so may result in inaccurate insulin delivery. Ensure insulin is seen moving through the tube and a puddle/droplet is displaced from the end of the tubing during priming.

Setting Basal Rates:

  • From the MAIN MENU, select 'Basal'.
  • From the 'Basal' menu, select 'Edit Basal'.
  • Confirm the current Basal profile.
