Overview

This document describes the DataComm Electronics Expandable Media Box with Duplex Surge Suppressor, Part # 45-0061-WH, an instruction and installation sheet for a device designed to manage cables and power behind HDTVs and other display devices.

Function Description

The Expandable Media Box with Duplex Surge Suppressor is designed to facilitate the installation of low voltage cables and provide power behind HDTVs or other display devices. It allows for the complete recessing of HDTV/display device plugs into the wall when plugged into the Media Box, ensuring a clean and flush installation. The device can be installed with the electrical receptacle on either the left or right side, offering flexibility in placement. A key feature is its "Expandable Cavity," which provides accessible storage space inside the wall for excess cables or small devices, helping to keep the installation tidy and organized. The integrated duplex surge suppressor protects connected electronics from power surges.

Important Technical Specifications

The product includes several components:

  • Expandable Media Box with Expandable Cavity: The main housing unit that provides the structure and storage.
  • Old Work Electrical Box: A standard electrical box for in-wall installation, complete with four mounting screws.
  • 15 Amp/125 Volt Duplex Surge Suppressor: An electrical outlet with two receptacles, designed to protect connected devices from power surges. This component is rated for 15 Amperes and 125 Volts.
  • Flexible Pass-Through Accessory Plate: A plate designed to conceal the opening through which low voltage cables pass, while allowing flexibility for cable movement.
  • Six (6) Port Keystone Accessory Plate: A plate that can accommodate up to six keystone jacks (e.g., for Ethernet, HDMI, coaxial cables), providing a modular solution for various low voltage connections.
  • Blank Accessory Plate: A cover plate for unused openings, maintaining a clean aesthetic.

Tools Required for Installation:

  • Drill with Phillips Bit or Phillips Head Screw Driver
  • Pen or Pencil
  • Sheetrock Saw or Utility Knife
  • 6 ft. Tape Measure

The device is designed for use with copper wire only and requires proper grounding for shock protection. The electrical wiring should adhere to all local electrical codes. The surge suppressor connects to a 14/2 with ground UL approved electrical building wire from a power source.

Usage Features

The Expandable Media Box offers several usage benefits:

  • Compact Size: Designed to fit behind both small and large TVs, making it versatile for various display sizes.
  • Expandable Cavity: Provides additional storage space within the wall, ideal for concealing excess cables, small media players, or power bricks, contributing to a clutter-free environment.
  • Flush Installation: Allows HDTV/display device plugs to recess completely into the wall, eliminating unsightly gaps and creating a sleek, professional look.
  • Flexible Cable Management: The Flexible Pass-Through Accessory Plate helps manage low voltage cables, while the Six (6) Port Keystone Accessory Plate offers modularity for different cable types (e.g., HDMI, Ethernet, Coaxial).
  • Surge Protection: The integrated 15 Amp/125 Volt Duplex Surge Suppressor protects valuable electronics from power fluctuations and surges.
  • Installation Flexibility: The Media Box can be installed with the receptacle on either the left or right side, adapting to specific installation requirements and preferences.
  • Easy Integration: Designed to be installed before the TV mount, allowing the TV mount bracket to be installed per the manufacturer's instructions after the Media Box is in place.

Maintenance Features

While the document does not explicitly detail maintenance features, it provides crucial instructions for safe and correct installation, which indirectly contribute to the longevity and proper functioning of the device:

  • Proper Grounding: Emphasizes that the device must be properly grounded for shock protection, which is a critical safety and operational requirement.
  • Copper Wire Only: Specifies the use of copper wire only, ensuring compatibility and preventing potential electrical issues that could arise from using incorrect wire types.
  • Adherence to Electrical Codes: Instructs users to follow all local electrical codes when running power to the Old Work Electrical Box, ensuring a safe and compliant electrical installation.
  • Wiring Instructions: Provides detailed instructions for connecting the hot line (black), neutral (white), and grounding (green or bare) wires to the surge suppressor, ensuring correct electrical connections.
  • Secure Mounting: Instructions for securing the Old Work Electrical Box and Receptacle to the mounting studs, and for fastening the Media Box to the drywall with screws and wings, ensure a stable and durable installation.

Important Safety Instructions (to be followed for proper maintenance and operation):

  • Read and understand all instructions.
  • Follow all warnings and instructions marked on the product.
  • Do not use this product near water (e.g., bath tub, wash bowl, kitchen sink, laundry tub, wet basement, swimming pool).
  • SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS for future reference.

By following these installation and safety guidelines, users can ensure the device operates safely and effectively, minimizing the need for extensive maintenance. The robust design and proper installation contribute to its long-term reliability.
