User Instructions for PTC Finned Resistor Heater HR / HRI / HRKK
Product Description
Self-regulating PTC finned resistor heaters, based on PTC technology, to heat up air streams.
Operating voltage acc. to marking: 220 – 240 V
100 – 120 V
230 – 400 V
Special Voltages (12 V ; 24 V ; 48 V ; 72 V)
Ambient Temperature: - 25°C to + 65 °C
Humidity: 85 % rH
Installation
Installation by trained and qualified personnel only.
When connecting to a power supply, please make sure that the voltage corresponds to the electrical
information on the heater. The installation must comply with relevant local regulations, technical directions
and recognised standards.
All metal parts of the heater are live parts – don’t touch when connected to power. The necessary protection
class, resp. clearance and creepage distances / minimum distances must be met and ensured by an
appropriate installation.
Touch protection towards the heater must be ensured by the way of installation.
Heater can be installed by using a mounting frame or the plastic end caps of the element.
The heater shall not be installed close to flammable materials.
The heater should be protected with a slow-blow fuse to avoid an accidental tripping of the fuse at cold start
of the heater.
When the heater is used in a dusty environment, an air filter should be installed in front of the heater to
avoid a deposit of fluff or dust in the aluminium fins of the element.
Operation
Electrical connection via 6,3 mm spade terminals.
Connection diagrams of the different heater types, see page 2 and 3.
Maintenance
Before cleaning or maintaining the heater, it must be fully disconnected from the net (with min. 3 mm
distance from the heater terminals to the connecting contacts).
The heater shall only be maintained and cleaned from qualified personnel.
The heater must be regularly tested on proper function.
A regular visual control with regard to contamination, foreign particles, loose parts or damage of the heater
shall be carried out by a technically qualified person.
The maintenance interval depends on the operating conditions but should not exceed 6 months.
Liquids or sharp articles shall never be used for cleaning purposes. Cleaning shall only be done with a brush
and/or vacuum cleaner.
There are no user-serviceable parts inside the heater. Disassembling the heater should not be attempted.
Warning
Never perform any works on the heater while it is energized.
All metal parts of the heater are live parts – don’t touch when connected to power.
The heater will remain hot several minutes after switch off.
An operation with insufficient airflow leads to an impairment of the function and lifetime.
The finned heaters shall only be used to heat up an air stream.
An operation in a humid and/or aggressive environment is inadmissible.
Applied heater identification shall not be removed or changed.

Overview

This document provides user instructions for PTC Finned Resistor Heaters, specifically models HR, HRI, and HRKK, manufactured by DBK. These devices are designed to heat air streams using self-regulating PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) technology.

Function Description:

The heaters utilize PTC technology, meaning their resistance increases with temperature, providing a self-regulating heating effect. This characteristic allows them to maintain a relatively constant temperature without external control, making them inherently safe against overheating. They are intended for heating air streams in various applications.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Operating Voltage: The heaters are available in several operating voltage configurations, as indicated by their marking:
    • 220-240 V
    • 100-120 V
    • 230-400 V
    • Special Voltages: 12 V, 24 V, 48 V, 72 V
  • Ambient Temperature Range: The devices are designed to operate within an ambient temperature range of -25°C to +65°C.
  • Humidity: They can operate effectively in environments with up to 85% relative humidity (rH).
  • Electrical Connection: Electrical connection is made via 6.3 mm spade terminals.
  • Construction: The heaters feature finned resistors, which increase the surface area for efficient heat transfer to the air stream.

Usage Features:

  • Installation:
    • Installation must be performed by trained and qualified personnel only.
    • It is crucial to ensure that the power supply voltage matches the electrical information on the heater.
    • Installation must comply with all relevant local regulations, technical directives, and recognized standards.
    • All metal parts of the heater are live when connected to power; direct contact must be avoided.
    • Appropriate protection class, clearance, and creepage distances must be maintained through proper installation to ensure touch protection.
    • The heater can be installed using a mounting frame or the plastic end caps of the element.
    • Heaters must not be installed near flammable materials.
    • A slow-blow fuse should be used to protect the heater and prevent accidental tripping during cold start.
    • In dusty environments, an air filter should be installed in front of the heater to prevent dust or fluff accumulation on the aluminum fins, which could impair performance.
  • Operation:
    • The heaters are designed for heating air streams only.
    • Operation in humid and/or aggressive environments is inadmissible.
    • Insufficient airflow will impair the function and lifetime of the heater.
    • The heater will remain hot for several minutes after being switched off.
    • Applied heater identification must not be removed or changed.
  • Connection Diagrams: The manual provides detailed electrical connection diagrams for various HR, HRI, and HRKK models, including:
    • HR 01 / HR 08 (AC*/DC* with N, L connections)
    • HR 05 / HR 06 (AC*/DC* with L, N connections)
    • HR 03 / HR 02 (AC*/DC* with N, L connections)
    • HR 09 / HR 18 (AC*/DC* with N, L connections)
    • HR 15 / HR 04 (AC*/DC* with L, N connections)
    • HR 11 / HR 22 (AC*/DC* with L, N connections)
    • HR 20 / HR 40 (AC*/DC* with N, L connections)
    • HRI 20 / HRI 40 (AC*/DC* 3N~/3~ with L1, N, L2, L3 connections)
    • HRI 15 / HRI 04 (AC*/DC* 3N~/3~ with L1, N, L2, L3 connections)
    • HRI 05 / HRI 06 (AC*/DC* 3N~/3~ with N, L1, L2, L3 connections)
    • The diagrams differentiate between AC and DC connections and specify the number of terminals and their corresponding labels (N for neutral, L for line, L1, L2, L3 for three-phase lines, and + for positive, - for negative in DC). The notation "* = je nach Typ" indicates that the specific configuration depends on the heater type.

Maintenance Features:

  • Disconnection: Before any cleaning or maintenance, the heater must be fully disconnected from the power supply, ensuring a minimum 3 mm distance between the heater terminals and the connecting contacts.
  • Qualified Personnel: Maintenance and cleaning must only be performed by qualified personnel.
  • Regular Testing: The heater must be regularly tested for proper function.
  • Visual Control: A regular visual inspection should be conducted by technically qualified personnel to check for contamination, foreign particles, loose parts, or damage.
  • Maintenance Interval: The maintenance interval depends on the operating conditions but should not exceed 6 months.
  • Cleaning Method: Cleaning should only be done with a brush and/or vacuum cleaner. Liquids or sharp articles must never be used for cleaning purposes.
  • No User-Serviceable Parts: There are no user-serviceable parts inside the heater, and disassembling the heater should not be attempted.
  • Safety Warning: Never perform any work on the heater while it is energized. All metal parts are live when connected to power and should not be touched.
