Overview

The DEWALT DCD708 and DCD709 are cordless compact 13 mm drill/driver/hammerdrills designed for professional power tool users. These tools are part of the DEWALT XR Li-ION series, indicating their compatibility with Li-ion battery packs.

Function Description

The DCD708 and DCD709 models are versatile tools capable of performing three primary functions: drilling, driving, and hammerdrilling.

  • Drilling: The tools can drill into various materials such as wood and metal. The chuck capacity allows for bits from 1.5 mm to 13 mm.
  • Driving: They function as screwdrivers, capable of driving screws into different materials. The variable speed trigger allows for precise control over the rotational speed, which is essential for screwdriving applications to prevent overtightening or stripping.
  • Hammerdrilling: The DCD709 model specifically includes a hammerdrill function, enabling it to drill into masonry and concrete. This function combines rotary motion with a hammering action to break through tough materials more effectively. The DCD708 is a drill/driver and does not have the hammerdrill function.

The tools feature a 2-speed gearbox, allowing users to select the appropriate speed range for the task at hand. The 1st gear provides lower speed and higher torque, suitable for heavy-duty screwdriving and drilling large holes. The 2nd gear offers higher speed, ideal for faster drilling in softer materials and lighter screwdriving tasks. The maximum torque (hard/soft) indicates the power available for demanding applications.

A forward/reverse control button is integrated for changing the direction of rotation, which is crucial for driving and removing screws, as well as for freeing jammed drill bits. The chuck is a keyless type, allowing for quick and easy bit changes without the need for a chuck key.

The tools are powered by 18V Li-ion battery packs, which are interchangeable within the DEWALT XR Li-ION system. This cordless design provides freedom of movement and convenience on the job site. An LED work light is included to illuminate the work area, improving visibility in dimly lit conditions.

Usage Features

Battery and Charging: The DCD708 and DCD709 utilize 18V Li-ion battery packs. These batteries are designed for quick and easy insertion and removal from the tool. To insert a battery pack, align it with the tool's handle and slide it in until it clicks securely into place. To remove, press the battery release button and pull the battery pack out.

Charging is performed using a DEWALT charger. The charging process involves inserting the battery pack into the charger. The charger typically features indicator lights to show the charging status (charging, fully charged, hot/cold pack delay). It is important to ensure the battery pack is fully charged before use to maximize performance and runtime. The charger also has an electronic protection system to prevent overcharging and overheating.

Bit Installation and Removal: The tools feature a keyless chuck for convenient bit changes. To install a drill bit or screwdriver accessory, grasp the rear sleeve of the chuck with one hand and use the other hand to rotate the front sleeve counterclockwise until the chuck jaws open wide enough. Insert the accessory fully into the chuck, then rotate the front sleeve clockwise to tighten the chuck jaws securely around the accessory. For maximum grip, give the chuck a final hand tightening. To remove an accessory, reverse the process.

Speed and Torque Control: The variable speed trigger allows for precise control over the tool's rotational speed. Pressing the trigger further increases the speed. The 2-speed gearbox allows users to select between high torque/low speed (1st gear) and low torque/high speed (2nd gear) settings, optimizing performance for different tasks.

For screwdriving, the torque control collar allows users to set the desired torque level. This prevents overtightening of screws and damage to the workpiece or fastener. The collar has multiple settings, with higher numbers indicating higher torque. For drilling, the collar should be set to the drill symbol for maximum power.

Hammerdrill Function (DCD709 only): To engage the hammerdrill function on the DCD709, rotate the mode selection collar to the hammerdrill symbol. This activates the hammering mechanism in addition to the rotary motion, making it suitable for drilling into masonry and concrete. For drilling into wood or metal, select the appropriate drill symbol on the mode selection collar.

Work Area Illumination: An integrated LED work light automatically illuminates the work area when the trigger is pressed, providing improved visibility in poorly lit conditions. This feature is particularly useful when working in confined spaces or dark environments.

Belt Hook: A belt hook is included for convenient temporary storage of the tool when not in use. This allows the user to keep the tool within easy reach while performing other tasks. The belt hook can typically be attached to either side of the tool.

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance: Regular maintenance is crucial for ensuring the longevity and optimal performance of the DEWALT DCD708 and DCD709 tools.

  • Cleaning: Keep the tool clean by regularly blowing dirt and dust out of the main housing with dry air. Do not use solvents or other harsh chemicals, as these can damage the plastic parts. Clean the ventilation slots to ensure proper airflow and prevent overheating.
  • Accessories: Ensure that all accessories, such as drill bits and screwdriver bits, are kept clean and in good condition. Worn or damaged accessories can reduce efficiency and potentially cause injury.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect the tool for any signs of damage, such as cracks in the housing, frayed cords (if applicable to chargers), or loose components. Any damaged parts should be repaired or replaced by a qualified service technician.

Battery Pack Maintenance:

  • Storage: Store battery packs in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excessive heat or cold. For optimal battery performance and life, store battery packs at room temperature when not in use.
  • Charging: Always use the recommended DEWALT charger for charging battery packs. Do not attempt to charge damaged battery packs.
  • Disposal: Li-ion cells are recyclable. When a battery pack reaches the end of its useful life, dispose of it responsibly through a local recycling station or dealer. Do not dispose of battery packs in household waste or by incineration.

Lubrication: The tool is designed for long-term operation with minimal maintenance. It typically does not require additional lubrication by the user. Internal lubrication is handled during manufacturing and should only be serviced by authorized personnel.

Carbon Brushes (if applicable): Some models may use carbon brushes. If so, these are wear items and may need periodic replacement. However, many modern DEWALT tools are brushless, eliminating the need for brush replacement. Refer to the specific model's design for details.

Service: For any repairs or extensive maintenance, it is recommended to contact an authorized DEWALT service center. Using unauthorized parts or attempting repairs without proper training can void the warranty and potentially lead to unsafe operation. DEWALT service centers have trained technicians and genuine replacement parts to ensure the tool is maintained to factory standards.
