Overview

This document describes the Doheny's In-ground Solar Reel, Item #6575, a system designed to manage a solar pool cover for in-ground pools. The reel facilitates the deployment and retrieval of a solar cover, helping to maintain pool temperature and reduce evaporation.

Function Description:

The Doheny's In-ground Solar Reel serves as a mechanical aid for handling solar pool covers. It consists of a central reel assembly, supported by two T-bases with wheels, and a hand crank for operation. The solar cover is attached to the reel via elastic straps and steel brackets, allowing it to be rolled up for storage or unrolled to cover the pool. This system is designed to simplify the often cumbersome task of managing large solar covers, making it easier for pool owners to utilize their covers for heat retention and debris protection. The wheeled T-bases allow the entire reel assembly to be moved along the edge of the pool, providing flexibility in positioning and storage.

Important Technical Specifications:

The reel system is constructed from various components including M5X80 screws with M5 closed nuts, M5X40 screws with M5 open nuts, wheels, T-bases, cotter pins, dowels, tube adapters (one short, one long), washers, caps, a wheel handle, fixations (steel pull brackets), and various screws (1/2", 1-3/4", 3/4"). The main reel assembly is formed by three tubes (two small, one big), approximately 8'6" in length, which can be adjusted to fit the width of the pool. The connection points for the tubes and adapters utilize screw holes for secure fastening. The design incorporates elastic straps for attaching the cover, ensuring a flexible and secure connection. The dowel, when inserted into the tube adapter, is designed to lock the adapter in place when turned downwards, with the pedal at a 90-degree angle from vertical.

Usage Features:

The installation process is divided into several key stages:

  1. Installing the Wheels: The wheels are attached to the T-bases by reinserting or adjusting the axle, sliding on the wheel and a small washer, inserting a cotter pin (bent outward to lock), and finally sliding a cap into place. This process is repeated for the second wheel.
  2. Installing the Wheel Handle to the Base: Elastic straps are first inserted into grooves on the large tube adapter. The large tube adapter is then slid into the T-base. The wheel handle is slid onto the top of the base, aligning its screw hole with a pre-drilled hole in the tube adapter axle. An M5X80 screw is then inserted and secured with an M5 closed nut.
  3. Installing the Tube Adapter to the Base (Opposite Side): On the side opposite the wheel handle, a tube adapter is inserted into the top of the T-base. A dowel is placed into the tube adapter, followed by a washer. An M5X40 screw is inserted and screwed into place, secured by an M5 open nut at the bottom. A cap is then slid into place.
  4. Installing the Tubes: The small tubes and the large tube are inserted into the tube adapters, ensuring the screw holes on the tube ends are exposed. Three 1-3/4" screws are used to secure the tubes to the adapters on both ends, tightened with a drill. Additionally, three 1/2" screws are used to secure the tubes to each other. The length of the tubes can be adjusted to fit the width of the pool.
  5. Attaching the Cover: The solar reel should be positioned near the edge of the pool (for rectangular pools) or at a midway point (for irregular pools). Holes are punched in the cover, and elastic straps are folded into the casing and slid into the cover. Once through, the elastic strap is unfolded to lock it securely. If installing in an offset position, the cover is folded where the elastic straps attach, allowing them to pass through both sides.
  6. Attaching the Fixation (Steel Bracket): The length of the tubes is adjusted to fit the pool's width. Steel brackets (fixations) are slid into the groove, aligning the indentation with the screw line. A 3/4" screw is inserted into the small groove of the tubing next to the bracket and drilled into place. This screw compresses the tube, locking the bracket. This process is repeated for the second fixation on the other side of the reel.

Maintenance Features:

The design emphasizes secure connections with various screws and nuts, suggesting a robust assembly. The use of cotter pins to lock the wheels in place provides a simple yet effective mechanism for stability. The ability to adjust the tube length allows for adaptability to different pool widths, which is a key maintenance feature for ensuring proper fit and function over time. The instructions mention the potential need for a rubber mallet during assembly (e.g., for sliding the wheel handle or cap into place), indicating that some components may fit snugly, contributing to overall stability once assembled. Regular checks of screw tightness and the condition of elastic straps and fixations would be advisable to ensure continued safe and effective operation. The components are designed for a straightforward assembly, implying that replacement of individual parts, if needed, would also be manageable.
